Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann became the third Bulldog goalkeeper to earn a solo shutout this season, the first time that has happened in program history
FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State women's soccer team shut out New Mexico 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field. Sophomore Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann became the third Bulldog goalkeeper to earn a solo shutout this season, the first time that has happened in program history.
"I think that it was a performance where we put together a solid 90 minutes" Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We have had some good play through several games, but this was one that we put together 90 minutes on both sides of the ball. I am really proud of the team."
The 'Dogs (6-5-1, 1-2-1 MW) now own a five-game home unbeaten streak, their best since winning five in a row in October 2013. This was the first time since 2004 that Fresno State has beaten New Mexico (5-5-2, 1-3-0 MW) and the first time ever at home.
The Bulldogs controlled possession for the majority of the match, getting off a season-high 21 shots, the same amount that the 'Dogs had the last time they faced the Lobos in a 5-1 loss in 2015. This year, the Fresno State defense didn't allow New Mexico to get its first shot off until the 37th minute of the game.
In the 35th minute, Bulldog junior Myra Delgadillo sent a corner kick into the box and found junior Marina Kerrache, who sent the ball into the net for her first collegiate goal. The assist was Delgadillo's seventh of the season and second of the weekend.
Just three minutes later, junior Carly Bracken sent a high pass into the box, where freshman Julia Glaser was able to bang it in and give the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead with her fourth goal of the year. At the half, Fresno State owned advantages in shots (14-4) and corner kicks (5-0).
"I think we did a really good job defensively," senior captain Alyssa Holsworth said. "We put together everything that we learned this week, offensively and defensively, and we took control of the game early. We went into halftime up 2-0 and we wanted to make sure we didn't get comfortable."
Twelve minutes into the second half, Delgadillo was fouled in the box, took advantage of the penalty kick and gave the Bulldogs some comfort with a 3-0 lead. The goal was Delgadillo's sixth this season.
Berwinkel-Kottmann recorded six saves in the game on 12 shots faced. Over the weekend, she played all 200 minutes, notched 13 saves and earned a 0.45 goals-against average, improving her season record to 1-0-1.
Fresno State junior Peyton Cline led the Bulldogs with four shots in the match, but was unable to find the back of the net. Eleven different 'Dogs recorded shots in the game.
"I think that we have a lot of players on the team that can influence the game," Zwaschka said. "I was proud of the people that came off the bench today who had a big influence, including Carly [Bracken] for having the assist on Julia's goal. Those guys came off the bench and they wanted to show their stuff and that started to change the game for us. We keep preaching that it is a team effort, and even though we have people like Myra that are consistently dangerous for us, we have a variety of people that are proving themselves and we just want that to continue."
The Bulldogs hit the road next weekend to face Utah State and Boise State before returning home on Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. PT to face Colorado State.
