FRESNO, Calif. - On a night when junior center Bego Faz Davalos set a new single-season program record for double-doubles in a season, the Fresno State women's basketball team was unable to overcome an eight-point halftime deficit on Saturday afternoon falling to Utah State 52-47 at the Save Mart Center.
Fresno State (11-9, 4-5 MW) was led in scoring by 19 points from sophomore guard Candice White, who connected on 7-of-8 from the free-throw line, and added four rebounds, three steals and an assist. Faz Davalos posted her 15th double-double of the season as she finished with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field and added 11 rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist. She has now moved into sole possession of second-place in program history in career double-doubles with 31. The 'Dogs shot 40.9 percent (18-44) from the field as a team and edged the Aggies 14-10 in second chance points.
Utah State (10-10, 3-6 MW) was led on the afternoon by sophomore guard Rachel Brewster with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Freshman forward Shannon Dufficy contributed 17 points (6-11 FG) and six rebounds, while freshman guard Eliza West added seven points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. The 'Dogs held Utah State to 37.0 percent (20-54) shooting from the field and 43.8 percent (7-16) from behind the arc.
How It happened: Falling behind 18-11 after the first quarter, the 'Dogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Aggies ran off 15 straight points converting three from beyond the arc to take a 15-5 lead. Utah State continued to lead by eight for the second quarter holding a 28-23 lead at the break.
Trailing at halftime for the 10th time in the last 11 games, the 'Dogs outscored Utah State 11-8 in the third quarter to cut the Aggies' lead to 36-34 as Faz Davalos scored nine of the 11 points in the frame.
The Aggies started the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run to extend its lead to 43-36 before a layup by Faz Davalos and a pair of free throws by White brought the Bulldogs back within three with 3:57 to play. Back-to-back field goals by Dufficy and West put the Aggies back up seven and after four more free throws by White cut the deficit back down to three at 47-44. After the teams traded free throws, Dufficy converted two more from the charity stripe to take a five-point edge with 27 seconds remaining. Tory Jacobs and Kendra Martin missed a pair of 3-pointers and two more free throws from Dufficy sealed the victory for Utah State.
Bego Faz Davalos – 13 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks
Recorded her 15th double-double this season and 31st of her career...she has now reached double figures in scoring in 17 games this season…notched her 15th game this season with double-figure rebounds...14th game with three or more blocks.
Candice White - 19 points
Notched her 16th double-digit scoring performance... seventh time she has led the 'Dogs in scoring this season.
Quotable:
Jaime White, Fresno State head coach
Opening Statement…
"Obviously we got off to a slow start again in the first quarter, something that has hurt us in the last couple of games. We were able to come back in others, but tonight we were not as lucky. I thought we weren't really sharp defensively and we had a lot of turnovers -- the biggest stat jumping out was their points off turnovers being 19-8. Our rebounding has been struggling and we can't go 0-8 from three in the second half. We shot 40 percent overall and were 25 percent in the fourth quarter, and we needed that fourth quarter to finish the game."
On the team having a week off…
"We practiced normal. I felt like we didn't overdo it or underdo it. We practiced well and had good energy. I think it has something to do with playing in a game where we have to make adjustments and be a little sharper. You can't take anything away from Utah State, I thought they played great defense; they were very physical and they did what the had to do. We have to continue to figure things out and what makes us tick, so we can be ready to go."
Bego Faz Davalos, junior center
On the game plan going into the second half...
"We were trying to get shots in, trying to understand and work against their defense."
On the spark that was missing during the game…
"We had opportunities to win and we had a good momentum in the fourth, but we couldn't finish. Shots weren't going in and we needed to work harder at the beginning of the game instead of just the end."
Candice White, sophomore, guard
On why it is so hard to finish strong in the fourth quarter…
"Once we started going to Bego a little bit more in the second half, things started to open up on the outside. I think we should have recognized that earlier and worked to get the ball to Bego. Even though she was getting doubled, she was always able to find the open guard on the perimeter."
On takeaways from the game…
"Every quarter is a new quarter -- individually and as a whole we need to focus on that. If it was a bad quarter, then we need to get it the next quarter. Going into Air Force and San Diego, two tough teams, this will really come in handy."
