FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team beat UNLV 4-1, behind a record-tying four goals from sophomore Julia Glaser. The win was crucial for the Bulldogs to stay in contention to finish in the top six of the conference, which would reserve their spot in the Mountain West Tournament.
"We were really excited to play at home after being on the road four-straight games," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "It really showed in the energy and commitment of all our players tonight. Our energy on both sides of the ball made all the difference against a strong offensive team like UNLV. Our team really worked as a unit tonight to get the offensive looks that Julia was able to capitalize on, and they worked really hard to get the defensive stops on the other end of the field."
Glaser's four goals in the contest tied the program record for most goals in a single-game, the record was set by Jill Pearson during the 2000 season. Glaser's four goals and eight points are also MW single-game highs this season. She now leads the conference in goals with 15 this season.
"We stuck to our game plan of putting a lot of pressure on UNLV's offense and that really opened up a lot of chances for us," Glaser said. "It felt amazing to score four goals tonight for my team, but I don't care who scores the goals as long as we win."
UNLV came into the match as the Mountain West leader in shots, points, goals, goals per game, assists and assists per game. Nationally, UNLV is No. 22 in goals, No. 27 in assists and No. 25 in points. None of those stats deterred Fresno State from playing its best game of conference play thus far. A mix of the Bulldogs' fierce defense and aggressive attacks on offense led them to victory over the Rebels.

Fresno State improves to 7-5-3 (2-3-2 MW) this season, tied for eighth in the MW.

Glaser, Marina Kerrache, Megan Amick, Myra Delgadillo, Melissa Ellis, Alissa Pham, Peyton Cline, Anna Crawford, Carly Bracken and Angie Weiner led the charge for the Bulldogs, with Nicole Theroux in the box.
FIRST HALF – Fresno State controlled the tempo of the match from the start. Delgadillo took a corner kick for the 'Dogs in the second minute, leading to a shot from Weiner. Weiner's shot was blocked in the box, but Glaser was there to kick the ball back in for the goal. Glaser's goal put Fresno State up 1-0 with 43 minutes left in the half.
The 'Dogs kept control of the ball, taking a shot on goal in the 18th minute. UNLV's keeper grabbed her first save of the night. In the 19th minute Crawford crossed the ball from the right side, finding Glaser in the box. Glaser connected with the cross and sent it to the back of the net for her second goal of the night.
UNLV took its first shot on goal in the 23rd minute, but Theroux was there to make the save. That was the closest the Rebels' offense got to scoring in the first half.
Fresno State finished the half with a 2-0 advantage over UNLV.
Â
SECOND HALF – The Rebels' offense responded quickly out of the huddle. UNLV's Sophie Cortes utilized her speed to score on a breakaway down the center of the field, shooting the ball over Theroux's head for the goal. UNLV cut Fresno State's lead in half, 2-1.
Â
Glaser countered by scoring on a penalty kick, recording her first hat trick of the season. Fresno State was up 3-1 in the 49th minute, but Glaser wasn't done yet. She scored a header off a cross from Delgadillo one minute later for her fourth goal of the contest. Fresno State went up 4-1 with 40 minutes left in the contest.
Â
UNLV would try one last time in the 88th minute, but Theroux made a phenomenal save jumping to punch the ball over the goal box. The 'Dogs three-goal cushion secured the win, proving to be too deep of a hole for the Rebels to climb out of.
Â
Overall, both teams took nine shots on the night and recorded two saves. UNLV owned the advantage in corner kicks 4-1.
