'Dogs down Wolf Pack for second straight win, 3-1

FRESNO, Calif. – For the first time during Mountain West play this season, the Fresno State women's soccer team picked up two victories on the same weekend, beating Nevada 3-1 Sunday afternoon. Two goals from Julia Glaser along with Melissa Ellis' first career goal, guaranteed the win for the Bulldogs. Fresno State recorded a season-high 26 shots in the contest, also marking a season-high 14 shots on goal.
"We got off to a great start and got the early goal we were hoping for," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "After Nevada scored the equalizer, we had to buckle down and regroup. I felt like we came out and controlled the second half. We are pleased we finished out the win, now we look forward to next week."
Fresno State improves to 8-5-3 (3-3-2 MW) on the season. The 'Dogs are currently in seventh place in the Mountain West standings.
Glaser, Ellis, Marina Kerrache, Myra Delgadillo, Alissa Pham, Peyton Cline, Anna Crawford, Sara Jo Ciapponi, Carly Bracken and Angie Weiner lead the charge for the Bulldogs, with Nicole Theroux in the box.
FIRST HALF – Glaser picked where she left off Friday night, scoring in the eighth minute to put the 'Dogs up 1-0. Cline had the assist on Glaser's goal. Fresno State continued to control the ball outshooting Nevada 7-1 in the first 15 minutes of the half.
The Wolf Pack caught a break in the 19th minute when they scored on a cross that went over Theroux's head.
Fresno State nearly regained the lead when Racine Babb had a breakaway, but her shot hit the post. Maria Gomez tried again for the 'Dogs, the Wolf Pack goalkeeper made a diving save to keep the game tied 1-1 going into halftime.
On the half, Fresno State owned the advantage in shots (14-2) and corner kicks (1-0).
SECOND HALF— The 'Dogs maintained their dominance in the second half. Fresno State shot four shots, two on goal, before Nevada could shoot one. The 'Dogs regained the lead in the 56th minute when Cline and Glaser combined for the second time in the match, putting the 'Dogs up 2-1.
Fresno State kept the ball on Nevada's side of the field, taking four consecutive corner kicks. The 'Dogs extended their lead 3-1 when Ellis scored her first career goal in the 73rd minute, unassisted.
From there, Fresno State's defense went to work preventing Nevada from taking a shot for the last 17 minutes of the match.
Overall, Fresno State owned the advantage in shots (26-3) and corner kicks (6-0). Nevada recorded more saves 11-1.
WHAT'S NEXT – Fresno State continues its four-game homestand hosting Air Force on Friday, Oct. 20 and Colorado College on Sunday, Oct. 22.
