Four 'Dogs compete at Roadrunner Open on Sunday

Four Fresno State wrestlers competed unattached at the 2017 Roadrunner Open on Sunday hosted by CSU Bakersfield at the Icardo Center.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Four Fresno State wrestlers competed unattached at the 2017 Roadrunner Open on Sunday hosted by CSU Bakersfield at the Icardo Center.
Freshman Brandon Martino was the 'Dogs top place winner taking third at 174 pounds advancing to the semifinals with a pair of victories. He made quick work of Tyler Nesbitt (Unattached) with a 0:49 fall and then dispatched a 17-2 technical fall of Bryce De Carmargo (CSUB) in the quarterfinals.
The Clovis native fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Ryan Christensen (Wisconsin) by a narrow 2-0 margin, but Martino came back in the consolation bracket to win a pair of matches beating Anthony Orozco (Menlo College), 7-5 before beating Bryan Battisto (CSUB), 10-2 to claim third place.
At 133 pounds, freshman Gary Joint finished fourth with a 3-2 record on the day winning his opening match with a fall in 3:23 over Noah Blakley-Beans and then won his next match to a medical forfeit at 2:11 to Michael Cullen (Wisconsin). He fell 7-3 in the semifinals to Illinois' Dylan Duncan before receiving another medical forfeit and then fell in his third-place match to Jens Lantz (Wisconsin), 2-0 in sudden victory.
A pair of Bulldogs also competed at 125 pounds as freshman Jeremy Trinh went 2-2 dropping his opening match by pin before reeling off back-to-back wins in the consolation bracket over Cody Cabanban (Menlo College), 7-5 and Keithen Estrada (Unattached) by fall in 1:48. He ran into teammate and fellow freshman Robert Garcia IV in the next match falling 5-2 as Garcia fell in the next match to Brandon Courtney (Arizona State Unattached), 8-3 in sudden victory. Garcia had won two of his three prior matches on the day with a pin over Cameron Keating (Sampson College) in 4:13 and beat Trinh with a loss in the quarterfinals to Ethan Rotondo (Wisconsin), 6-5.
Fresno State returns to action as a team on Tuesday when they compete in the inaugural Battle on the Midway against fellow Big 12 foe Air Force. The dual is set to begin at 6 p.m. with six Team USA exhibition matches before the 'Dogs and Falcons compete at 7 p.m. The match with be live on the radio on 940 AM ESPN with Paul Loeffler and Stephen Abas on the call.
