Junior shortstop Korby Batesole drove home Ashford with an RBI sacrifice bunt and Akins made it 5-2 with a single up the middle scoring Bins.
Batesole added an RBI sacrifice bunt in the sixth to increase the lead to 6-2 as the Eagles added a run in the ninth before Santa Cruz got Jeremy Stidham, who represented the game-tying run, to fly out to center field.

On starting pitcher Davis Moore's performance…
"We got exactly what we needed from him. He didn't have his good fastball, but he was able to locate it when he needed to. It was all about him just throwing the ball over the plate. Having a freshman go out there and throw six innings in 70-something pitches is outstanding on a Sunday afternoon."
On Korby's play at SS in the first inning that saved a run…
"There's a lot more to it. That Davis Moore making an outstanding pitch, a dirty two-seamer, and their guy just happened to get the barrel on it. The play is made by Jesse [Medrano], with some toughness, being able to throw his body in front of a bullet to make things all work together."
"I've been tracking it for 20 years in Division 1 baseball – you score first and you win 82 percent of the time – that's a gigantic number and it's bigger than most people think. Since they didn't score first and we did score first, all because of that play in the second inning, that's a big part of why we were able to go to our short game."
On the Korby's two sacrifice bunts that led to runs…
"What's the difference if those balls are hit 400 feet, backing the center fielder back to the wall? They're both sacrifices and they're both runs."
On freshman catcher Carter Bins three hits on the day…
"He had some good at-bats [today], and he had some good at bats last night, that's fantastic; but what he's in there for is to receive and to block – to run the game. He's so far beyond his years. He really handles the game well. For such a young kid, things go so slowly for him. We demand a lot from our catchers, and there's a lot more going on there than what people think. It's slow for him and he gets it – he's always on it and he makes it look easy. He's going to be one of those special one's when things are all said and done. Three years from now, some big league team is going to be really, really happy."
On maintaining success for future games…
"It's simple. Do what we did the last two days on the mound. Keep it simple, stay zero and throw the ball over the plate. Our defense has been fantastic and offensively we are doing enough. We have some guys with outstanding stuff, but that doesn't mean anything unless we can continue to throw it over the white. I think we've cleared things up the last two games, so we are going to see if we can keep things rolling."
