'Dogs drop series opener at New Mexico

The 'Dogs and Lobos return to action on Saturday for the second game of the series scheduled for 1 p.m. PT.
Fresno State (14-11, 5-5 MW) was held to nine hits in the contest with four going for extra bases. Senior third baseman Jesse Medrano hit his first triple of the season and second of his career while senior second baseman Scott Silva smacked his first career triple. Senior outfielder Jake Stone added his seventh double of the season and sophomore designated hitter Zach Ashford hit his second double of the season.
New Mexico (17-9, 10-0 MW) scored 24 runs on 22 hits as the Lobos put together three innings with six or more runs. Three Lobos had four-hit performances as seven different players had multi-hit games and eight players had hits in the contest.
The 'Dogs got the scoring started in the top of the first with a one-out triple to left center by Silva drove in senior outfielder Austin Guibor who got on board after a throwing error by Lobos catcher Daniel Herrera. Stone reached base after another Lobo error allowed Silva to score and the 'Dogs rounded out the scoring with an RBI single to center field by junior outfielder Jared Akins drove in Stone from second base.
The Lobos answered right back in the bottom of the first with six runs on six hits off Bulldog starter Fred Schlichtholz and were aided by a Bulldog throwing error that allowed the inning to continue to take a 6-3 lead. New Mexico added four more runs in the second scoring a run off a off a bases-loaded hit by pitch, one more off a walk and added two more runs on an RBI double by Andre Vigil to take a 10-3 lead.
New Mexico tacked on a run on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth, but Bulldog reliever Ryan Jensen was able to strand the bases loaded before Mark Reece was able to work a 1-2-3 fifth inning. Jensen matched his season-high with 2.2 innings pitched allowing five hits, one earned run while throwing 70 pitches.
A seven-run bottom of the sixth off Reece pushed the Lobos lead to 18-3 and the Lobos added six runs in the seventh to make it 24-3 before a run by Ross Dodds, his first of the season made the final 24-4.
New Mexico starter Tyler Stevens went seven complete innings limiting the 'Dogs to five hits and struck out nine for his fourth win of the season. Schlichtholz, who entered the game leading the Mountain West in fewest earned runs allowed with 11 and hits with 20, allowed 10 runs, nine earned, and seven hits in 1.1 innings for his third loss of the season.
The 'Dogs and Lobos return to action on Saturday for the second game of the series at 5:30 p.m. PT.
