The Fresno State baseball team won only its second-ever game at New Mexico on Saturday evening topping the Lobos 2-1 in 11 innings.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A sacrifice bunt by sophomore Zach Ashford in the 11th inning allowed Jake Stone to score from third base to give Fresno State baseball only its second-ever road win at New Mexico as the 'Dogs prevailed in a pitcher's duel topping the Lobos 2-1 on Saturday evening at Santa Ana Star Field.
"It was an outstanding game by both starting pitchers and pitching staffs tonight. I am proud of the team for continuing to compete all game, and what a gutty performance by Rickey Ramirez and Edgar Gonzalez on the mound," said head coach Mike Batesole after the win.
Fresno State (15-11, 6-5 MW), who was held without a hit through the first four innings, finished with eight hits in the contest as junior first baseman Aaron Arruda went 3-for-4 to match his career-high for hits and had the lone extra-base hit of the game with a double and scored a run. Stone had his fourth multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles and scored the game-winning run and Ashford drove in both runs.
New Mexico (17-9, 10-1 MW) dropped its first Mountain West contest of the season after starting conference play with a MW-record 10 straight wins. The Lobos had eight hits in the game with Jared Mang and Jack Zoellner each hitting a pair of singles and four other Lobos had singles.
A scoreless game through the first four innings, the 'Dogs got the scoring started in the fifth as Arruda laced the Bulldogs first hit of the game smacking a double down the left field line. Only the second baserunner of the game for Fresno State, a groundout by Jared Akins moved Arruda to third and an RBI groundout by Ashford drove in Arruda to put the 'Dogs up 1-0.
With the Lobos getting the leadoff runner on board in each of the first eight innings, Jack Zoellner led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk off Bulldog starter Rickey Ramirez. Zoellner moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout before a sacrifice fly to left field by pinch-hitter Danny Collier tied the game at 1-1.
After exiting the game after 6.1 innings and allowing only the lone run and six hits, sophomore Edgar Gonzalez came on with one out in the bottom of the seventh and despite loading the bases with a pair of walks, he struck out Lobo shortstop Andre Gregory to keep UNM from taking a lead. New Mexico equaled the 'Dogs strong pitching in the top of the eighth as Carter Bins and Korby Batesole jumped on base with a walk and single, respectively, but Lobo reliever Justin Slaten was able to strike out the next three Bulldogs to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Gonzalez came up big again in the bottom of the eighth allowing the first two Lobos to reach base via walks, but picked up a strikeout of center fielder Luis Gonzalez, got an out on a fielder's choice by Hayden Schilling and closed out the frame with a swinging strikeout of Carl Stajduhar to keep the game deadlocked at 1-1.
After the 'Dogs left the bases loaded in the top of the ninth, Gonzalez worked around a one-out single by Zoellner to escape the inning to force extra innings for the third time this season.
Senior outfielder Austin Guibor was tossed out at third base trying to advance on a single up the middle by Scott Silva to end the top of the 10th before Ashford's heroics turned out to win the game in the game in the 11th. Stone led off with a single to center field, stole second base and moved to third on a fielder's choice by Akins.
Gonzalez worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th to secure his second win of the season as the right-hander tossed the final 4.2 innings keeping the Lobos scoreless and to two hits while matching his career-high with six strikeouts. Gonzalez and Ramirez combined to leave 16 runners on base and held the Lobos to .111 (3-27) with runners on base.
The 'Dogs and Lobos wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 11 a.m. PT from Santa Ana Star Field.
