Lee tied for the lead with Friday’s final round on the horizon

The final 18 holes of the El Macero Classic is set to tee off at noon PT for the ‘Dogs
EL MACERO, Calif. – The Bulldogs have a leader. After the first 36 holes of Thursday's El Macero Classic, Fresno State's Alex Lee is tied with Ben Corfee of UC Davis atop the individual leaderboard with identical 1-over-par scores. Lee fired a first round even-par 72 and a second round 1-over-par 73.
Meanwhile, the team is in striking distance for the tournament title, sitting four strokes back from the overall leader, Oregon State, and second-place UC Davis. Positioned in third, the Bulldogs own a team score of 603 (+27) while the Beavers own a 599 (+23) and the Aggies own a 601 (+25).
Lee was one of three individuals of the 78-person field to card seven birdies during the opening day. Three came in the first round, each on a par-3, par-4 and par-5, while the next four took place during the second round. Lee did the most damage on the par 5's as he averaged a 4.63 by going 3-under on those holes.
Lee's final birdie of the day, on the 18th green to cap the second round, was a feat shared with teammates Justin Avery and Greg Gildea, who also birdied the day's final hole as the 'Dogs closed Thursday's round strong.
Not far back from Lee, Avery is tied for 11th at 7-over-par (76-75) and Trevor Clayton is tied for 16th at 8-over-par (75-77). Clayton was inside the top 10 with five holes remaining in second round, but faltered going 5-over-par over those five holes.
Gildea is tied for 36th. He carded a first round 7-over-par 79 and battled back for a 4-over-par 76 during the next round.
The fifth member of the team, Russell Takeuchi, posted a 9-over-par 81 and a 5-over-par 77 to open play on Thursday. He is tied for 52nd.
Cody Neal, who played as an individual, recorded a first round 5-over-par 77 and an 8-over-par 80 on the next 18 holes. He is tied for 50th.
Friday's final round tees off at 8:50 a.m. for the Bulldogs. Follow results live on Golfstat.com.
