The Bulldogs and Wolf Pack play the series finale at Peccole Park at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
RENO, Nev. - A pair of extra-base hits by Nevada that drove in a combined six runs proved to be too much to overcome on Saturday evening as the Fresno State baseball team fell 7-3 to the Wolf Pack at Peccole Park.
Fresno State (18-20, 8-9 MW) was held to seven hits in the contest, its fewest since April 2 at New Mexico. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda tied his career-high with three hits, all singles, in four at-bats as it was his 12th career game with three base knocks. Senior third baseman Jesse Medrano tallied his 16th multi-hit game of the season with a pair of extra-base hits picking up a seventh-inning double and a ninth-inning triple while freshman catcher Carter Bins added an RBI single.
Nevada (13-26, 9-11 MW) totaled eight hits in the game as four different Wolf Pack players had two hits apiece. Leadoff hitter Justin Bridgman had two doubles and three RBIs while left fielder Chase Grant hit his first home run of the season with a three-run shot in the eighth inning.
After a scoreless first inning, the Wolf Pack took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a two-out long ball by Grant to right field off Bulldog starter Rickey Ramirez.
The 'Dogs responded in the top half of the third getting one run back on an RBI groundout by designated hitter Zach Ashford that brought in shortstop Korby Batesole, who led off the frame by reaching base due to a Wolf Pack error.
Nevada increased its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth scoring an unearned run on a Bulldog error as Medrano went to tag Wolf Pack first baseman Grant Fennell, but the ball scooted away from him allowing Fennell to score from third.
The Wolf Pack looked to extend its lead in the sixth loading the bases with two outs, but Bulldog freshman right-hander Ryan Jensen came into the game and stranded the bases juiced as he forced a groundout to second.
The 'Dogs continued to chip away at the Wolf Pack lead in the seventh inning as Bins drove a one-out single through the left side to bring home Medrano from third base to make it a 4-2 contest.
Unfortunately for the 'Dogs that was as close as they would get as Nevada's Bridgman laced a two-out bases-loaded double to left center off Dominic Topoozian to clear the bases and make it a 7-2 lead for Nevada.
Medrano led off the ninth with his second triple of the season and third of his career with a base knock to right center and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Batesole to make the final score 7-3.
Ramirez suffered his fifth loss of the season as he tossed 5.2 innings limiting the Nevada to five hits, four runs, three earned and struck out two. JJ Santa Cruz, Jensen, Fred Schlichtholz and Topoozian rounded out the 'Dogs hurlers.
The Bulldogs and Wolf Pack play the third and final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
