Fresno State (19-20, 9-9 MW), who snapped a three-game losing skid, finished the day with all nine position players totaling two-plus hits as junior first baseman Aaron Arruda matched single-game program records with three home runs and nine RBIs as he also set career-highs with four hits and four runs scored.
It was the first time a 'Dogs has hit three home runs since Brian Lapin hit three in a 17-4 win over Nevada on May 27, 2007 while his nine RBIs matched Josh Hannah's output from April 26, 1998 in a 25-9 win over Hawai'i.
Senior outfielder Austin Guibor matched his career-high with four hits, including his eighth double of the season, drew two walks and scored two runs. Senior outfielder Jake Stone had his first three-hit performance of the season, drove in a pair of RBIs and matched his career-high with three runs scored. Junior outfielder Jared Akins had a pair of extra-base hits smacking his team-leading 15th double and added his third home run of the season.
Scott Silva, Jesse Medrano, Korby Batesole, Carter Bins and Zach Ashford each had two hits apiece while junior Torin Goldstein came off the bench in the ninth inning to hit his first career home run with a two-run bomb to left field. Senior Joe Prior added a seventh-inning single as 11 different Bulldogs totaled a hit on the afternoon.
After Bulldog starting pitcher Ricky Tyler Thomas worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first, the 'Dogs got the big offensive day started in the third inning taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run to left field by Arruda.
Nevada (13-27, 9-12 MW) cut the Bulldogs lead in half in the bottom of the third with an RBI double to left center by catcher Marco Valenzuela that drove in left fielder Grant Fennell from second after he reached base on a one-out double to right field.
The Bulldogs kept the offense going on in the top of the fourth with a four-run frame to take a 6-1 advantage. After Medrano led off with a single to left field, Batesole reached on a fielder's choice after Wolf Pack pitcher Chase Grant's throw to second base went awry. Bins was hit by his team-leading fifth pitch of the season to load the bases for Ashford who delivered a two-run single through the left side driving in Medrano and Batesole to make it 4-1.
A four-pitch walk to Guibor loaded the bases back up as Stone brought in Bins despite hitting into a 4-6-3 double play. The final run of the frame scored on an RBI single through the right side by Silva that brought in Ashford from third base.
Nevada continued to chip away at the 'Dogs lead getting two runs back in the bottom of the frame with a two-out two-run double to left field by Echavia to make it 6-3.
The 'Dogs kept the offense going in the fifth adding a run to make it 7-3 as Batesole led off with his third double of the season to left center, moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bins and came home to score on an RBI groundout back to the pitcher by Ashford.Â
After Thomas escaped the fifth unharmed thanks to the 'Dogs turning an inning-ending double play, Fresno State kept the offense rolling in the sixth matching a season-high with sevens to take a commanding 14-3 lead.
Akins led off with a solo shot to left center before four straight RBI singles by Guibor, Stone, Arruda pushed the 'Dogs lead to 11-3. Silva followed with a RBI double to down the left field line to bring in Stone and extend the lead to 12-3. Akins made it six straight hits in a row for the 'Dogs completing the scoring with a two-run double to right field to score Arruda and Silva.
A leadoff home run to start the bottom of the sixth by the Wolf Pack center fielder Cole Krzmarzick made it 14-4 before a four-run seventh inning made it 18-4 as the 'Dogs scored a pair of runs on an RBI double by Guibor and added two more on Arruda's second home run of the day to left center.
Already reaching a season-high for runs, the 'Dogs were not done for the day adding seven more runs in the eighth to take a 25-4 lead. Four were driven in on a grand slam by Arruda, and one apiece on an RBI single by Bins and bases-loaded walks to Guibor and Stone.
Goldstein's first career home run made it a 27-4 advantage for the 'Dogs as the Wolf Pack added a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth for the final score of the game.
Thomas picked up his third win of the season, and his first since March 3, tossing six innings allowing nine hits, four runs and struck out four. Senior Mark Reece picked up his first save of the season and second of his career tossing the final three innings allowing two hits, one run and tied his career-high with four strikeouts.
Fresno State completes its five-game road swing on Tuesday evening traveling to Cal Poly (18-20) for a 6 p.m. contest before returning home to host San Jose State (13-24-1, 7-12-1 MW) in a three-game series starting Friday.
