Alex Lee posts top 15 finish at MW Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. – Sophomore Alex Lee finished the 2017 Mountain West Men's Golf Championship at OMNI Tucson National 1-under-par after 54 holes. En route to a tie for 15th, he fired his second-straight sub-par round on Sunday with a 1-under-par 71, to follow a 4-under-par 68 in Saturday's second round.

Lee carded two of the Fresno State men's golf team's three sub-72 rounds on the par 72, 7,194-yard Catalina Course. The course played to a 72.82 average over 165 rounds between 11 teams and 55 individuals.

As a team, the Bulldogs placed 11th – their lowest finish since 2015. Fresno State fired an 11-over-par 299 in its final round on Sunday, dropping to 20-over-par (884) for the event.

Trevor Clayton, who fired the 'Dogs third under-par round, a 1-under 71 on Saturday, finished 35th – a year removed from becoming the first Bulldog to win an individual MW championship since joining the league. The senior posted a 4-over-par 220, capping his final MW event with a 3-over-par 75 on Sunday.

The 'Dogs second senior of the group to travel to Tucson, Russell Takeuchi, owned the next-best finish having tied for 40th. He shot a 7-over-par 223. Takeuchi posted a personal event-best even-par 72 on Friday – Sunday he shot a 3-over-par 75.

Junior Justin Avery placed 48th while classmate Greg Gildea placed tied for 54th. Avery wrapped up the MW Championship on Sunday firing a 6-over-par 78, Gildea shot a 7-over-par 79.

Looking forward, the team returns Avery (junior), Gildea (junior). Lee (sophomore), Michael Li (freshman) and Cody Riecks (junior) and have announced incoming freshmen Cameron Delaere, Kevin Huff and Lane Pulliam for the 2017-18 roster. The current squad will lose four from a senior class that featured Clayton, Takeuchi as well as Cody Neal and Troix Tonkham.
