Behind a three-hit performance from junior first baseman Aaron Arruda, the Fresno State baseball team defeated New Mexico 9-3 on Friday evening at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium to win the series opener over the Lobos.
In what is likely his final career start at home, junior southpaw Ricky Tyler Thomas picked up his sixth win of the season tossing five innings limiting the Lobos to only six hits, three earned runs, four walks and struck out eight. The San Diego native finishes his Bulldog career with an 11-3 overall mark at home posting a 2.03 ERA and tossing 115.0 innings and striking out 135 batters. Junior left-hander Fred Schlichtholz converted his second save of the season throwing the final four innings allowing only three hits and struck out three.
Fresno State (27-22, 14-11 MW), winners of nine of its last 11 games, finished with nine hits in the contest as Arruda finished a triple shy of the cycle tallying a single, double and a home run to go along with three RBIs and two runs scored. Senior outfielder Austin Guibor was the other 'Dog with multi-hits picking up a single along with his third home run of the game while matching his career-high scoring three runs.
New Mexico (28-21-1, 18-5-1 MW) matched the 'Dogs with two hits as left fielder Jared Mang had a single and double and drove in three RBIs. Shortstop Hayden Schilling had a pair of singles and scored a run while center fielder Luis Gonzalez smacked his 20th double of the season and scored a run.
The Lobos got the scoring started in the top of the second inning with a bases-loaded double to left field by Mang that plated three runs to give New Mexico an early lead. The 'Dogs immediately responded with a four-run bottom of the frame driving home one run on an RBI double to right-center by Korby Batesole before a three-run home run to right field by Guibor put the 'Dogs ahead 4-3.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 5-3 in the third inning as Arruda led off with his 12th double of the season and after advancing to third on a passed ball, he came home to score on a sacrifice bunt down the first base line by senior third baseman Jesse Medrano.
Fresno State continued to build its lead in the fourth inning as Arruda again came through with a big hit launching a three-run home run to left field for his 26th career home run. His long ball drove in Guibor and Stone who each reached base on back-to-back four-pitch walks.
The 'Dogs scored in their fourth half-inning with one final run in the sixth scoring an unearned run after Lobo first baseman Brandon Langan's throw to pitcher Austin Isenhart went awry and allowed Guibor to score from second base and give the Bulldogs' a 9-3 lead.
Schlichtholz shut down the Lobos offense from there as the 'Dogs picked up the win in the two teams' first meeting in Fresno since 2015. Prior to Friday's game, Guibor, Medrano, assistant coach Ryan Overland and sons Korby and Kody Batesole joined head coach Mike Batesole on the field to present him with a framed jersey commemorating his 500th win at Fresno State.
The two teams play the second game of the series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. for Youth Jersey Saturday as all kids wearing their youth jerseys get into the game for free. Prior to the game, Bulldog Hall of Famer Larry Gonsalves will throw out the first pitch as he nears the 50th anniversary of his perfect game in 1967.
