'Dogs run-rule Wolf Pack 15-5 to stay alive in the Mountain West Tournament

Staving off elimination and living to see another day at the Mountain West Tournament, the Fresno State baseball team defeated Nevada 15-5 in seven innings on Friday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Staving off elimination and living to see another day at the Mountain West Tournament, the Fresno State baseball team defeated Nevada 15-5 in seven innings on Friday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.
"It was a win or go home game for us so I had to go out there and battle," said starting pitcher Edgar Gonzalez who tossed a complete game as the second-team All-MW selection picked up his sixth win of the season. "We have a lot of great senior leadership pushing us and we have opportunities to continue to keep winning and advancing in the tournament."
Fresno State (33-24), who has not lost back-to-back games since April 21-22 at Nevada, pounded out 16 hits in the game for its 16 game of the season with 15 or more hits as a team. Leading the way on Friday was junior outfielder Jared Akins who slugged a pair of home runs, added his team-leading 21st double, scored a pair of runs and drove in three RBIs.Â
Junior shortstop Korby Batesole had his second straight three-hit performance with a single and a pair of doubles, matched his career-best with three RBIs and scored a pair of runs. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda added a single, double, three RBIs and a run while senior outfielder Jake Stone added a grand slam and freshman catcher Carter Bins added a two-run home run.
Gonzalez, who shut down the Wolf Pack offense to one hit through the first five innings, went the distance tossing seven innings allowing five hits, five runs, issued two walks and struck out a career-best nine.
Scoring first for the second straight game, the 'Dogs jumped on the board in the second inning with a three-run frame as Batesole laid down his Mountain West-leading 13th sacrifice bunt of the season driving home senior third baseman Jesse Medrano for the game's first run. Bins followed with his sixth home run of the season with a two-run shot to left field to put the Bulldogs ahead 3-0.
The Bulldogs continued to keep the offense going in the bottom of the third with three more runs as Akins led off with his eighth home run of the season before Batesole drove in two more runs with a double up the middle to score Medrano and senior second baseman Scott Silva giving the 'Dogs a 6-0 lead.
The 'Dogs doubled up their lead in the fifth inning to 12-0 roughing up Wolf Pack pitching for six runs as Stone smacked a grand slam to center field and Akins followed with his second home run of the afternoon with a two-run shot to right-center to put Fresno State.
The Wolf Pack offense came to life in the top of the sixth pushing across five runs off Gonzalez scoring one run on a wild pitch, added a three-run home run to left field by third baseman Grant Fennell before finishing the scoring with a solo home run by right fielder Mike Echavia.
Fresno State added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the run-rule victory as Arruda cleared the bases with his 15th double of the season putting the 'Dogs ahead 15-5.
The Bulldogs now advance to Saturday's first game at Noon PT where they will face the loser of Friday's second game between top-seed New Mexico (30-25-1) and second-seed San Diego State (39-18).
