FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team fell to Utah State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium. A goal from the Aggies in the ninth minute of the match led them to victory.
The Bulldogs fall to 5-4-1 (0-2 MW) on the season.
"We are disappointed that we didn't get the result we wanted," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "We have to look at the way we're playing and realize that we are doing the right things. We are creating a lot of chances for our offense, if it wasn't for their goal keeper making amazing saves and a few unlucky shots going off the posts and bar it would of been a totally different game. We didn't get the result but if we keep playing the way we are playing the results will come."
Marina Kerrache, Megan Amick, Julia Glaser, Myra Delgadillo, Melissa Ellis, Alissa Pham, Maria Gomez, Anna Crawford, Carly Bracken and Kayla Calmes lead the charge for Fresno State, with Nicole Theroux in the box.
FIRST HALF – Fresno State came out strong on offense recording back-to-back corner kicks and back-to-back shots, before Utah State had the chance to record any stats. Utah State took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute of the match when Bailee Hammond found the back of the net.
The 'Dogs stayed relentless in their pursuit of a goal, outshooting the Aggies 9-7 in the first half. The 'Dogs also held the advantage in corner kicks through the first half 4-0. Despite Fresno State's best efforts, the Utah State goalie Sara Cobb recorded six saves in the first half to hold the 'Dogs scoreless.
SECOND HALF – Fresno State started off the second half with back-to-back shots on goal from Delgadillo and Bracken in the 46th and 47th minute, respectively. Utah State's goalie made two clutch saves to keep the lead.
The 'Dogs played tough defense in the second half and were aggressive on the attack, out-shooting the Aggies 7-0 to finish the game. Corner kicks were even at 2-2 in the second half. The Aggie goalkeeper recorded three saves on the half.
Utah State was whistled for a foul in the 89th minute, Angie Weiner took the kick. Weiner's ball found the back of the net despite the goalie's attempt to stop it, but the referee called offsides and the goal was erased off the scoreboard. The 'Dogs tried desperately to reclaim the goal with another shot but time expired.
Overall, Fresno State recorded more shots (17-7) and corner kicks (6-2). Utah State recorded more saves in the contest (9-3).
