HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Fresno State wrestling team finished seventh at the 2018 Midlands Championships as four Bulldogs placed in the top eight in their respective weight classes.
"I think overall it was a decent performance for us as a team," said head coach Troy Steiner. "I was excited coming in here to finally have our full group together and we have had a few guys injured and Josh Hokit was with the football team so it was good to have the full team together. I think for the most part overall it was a good performance by our student-athletes."
Leading the way was redshirt freshman 184-pounder Jackson Hemauer who went 4-2 in the tournament and was the lone Bulldog to advance to the semifinals where he fell to top-seeded Drew Foster of Northern Iowa, 11-1. The Wisconsin native then went down to the consolation bracket and upset fifth-seeded Christian LaFragola of Brown for the second time in the tournament notching a 12-2 major decision.
A former Wisconsin Badger himself, who transferred to Fresno State in January 2018, Hemauer closed out his tournament going for third place against his former teammate and sixth-seeded Mason Reinhardt falling 4-1 to claim fourth.
Also going for third place was sophomore heavyweight AJ Nevills who received three medical forfeits in the consolation bracket to advance and meet sixth-seeded Matt Stencel of Central Michigan. The Clovis native fell 10-5 to the sophomore from CMU only trailing 2-1 after the first period, but was unable to rally back.
The Bulldogs' other two place winners each took seventh as redshirt junior 149-pounder Khristian Olivas and junior 197-pounder Josh Hokit both won their final matches of the tournament.
Olivas opened his day with a 15-0 technical fall win over 13th-seeded Tres Leon from the University of the Cumberlands taking a quick 10-0 lead after the first period on his way to a quick victory. The Clovis native then fell 11-2 to Jacori Teemer, an unattached wrestler from Arizona State to send him to the seventh place match where he met Henry Pohlmeyer from South Dakota State. Rallying from a early 6-0 deficit, Olivas was able to get a second period takedown and take Pohlmeyer to his back where he was able to secure a fall in 4:12.
Hokit began his day with a 4-2 win in sudden victory over Alex Hopkins from Army to stay alive in the consolation bracket. Moving on to face second-seeded Jacob Warner from Army, Hokit was leading the Hawkeye 4-3 before a turn to his back was the end for Hokit who was pinned in 5:59. Hokit ended his day on a positive note with a fall over 12th-seeded Brett Perry of Buffalo in the seventh place match in 6:28. Hokit finished the tournament 6-2 after he battled back from an opening round loss.
Finally, redshirt freshman 133-pounder Gary Joint wrestled in the consolation bracket falling 9-4 to fifth-seeded Zachary Sherman, an unattached wrestler from North Carolina, as he came one win shy of placing in the top eight.
