'Dogs open the New Year hosting Cal Baptist on Thursday

It is Social Media Madness Night on Thursday as the Bulldogs get back to dual meet action hosting Cal Baptist at the Save Mart Center at 7 p.m. Follow or like Fresno State Athletics on Social Media for FREE Admission.
FRESNO, Calif. - After finishing in the top 10 over the weekend at the Midlands Championships, the Bulldog wrestling team gets back to dual meet action hosting Cal Baptist on Thursday at the Save Mart Center at 7 p.m.Â

The Lancers are in their first season of transitioning to Division I after making the move from Division II where they placed third at the 2018 Division II National Championships.
CBU is 1-1 is dual meets this season with a 28-10 win at Cal Poly on Nov. 10. The Lancers then hosted then-ranked No. 2 Ohio State on Nov. 16 in front of a record-home crowd of 3,252 falling 42-0 to the Buckeyes.
In their last time out, the Lancers' were led by 141-pound redshirt freshman Zander Silva who placed fifth at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 20.
Cal Baptist won the RMAC last season and have a pair of wrestlers returning this season who placed at last season's Division II national tournament as redshirt junior 149-pounder Daxton Gordon won the 149-pound weight class and redshirt sophomore Garrett Strang qualified at 197 pounds, but has moved down to 174 pounds this season. As part of the Division I transition process, CBU is not eligible for postseason until the 2022-23 season.
'Dogs in the national rankings
Three 'Dogs enter the new calendar year ranked as Khristian Olivas at 149 pounds has moved up to No. 16 by Trackwrestling and No. 18 by FloWrestling while Jackson Hemauer is No. 20 at 184 pounds by Trackwrestling. Finally, AJ Nevills has moved up to No. 13 at heavyweight, his highest ranking of the season.
Kincaid to face former team
Redshirt junior 174-pounder Dominic Kincaid is set to face his former school, Cal Baptist on Thursday for the first time. A 2015 graduate of Clovis High School, Kincaid spent his first two collegiate seasons at CBU where he redshirted in 2015-16 and went 11-10 overall as a redshirt freshman in 2016-17 racking up a 8-7 dual meet mark.
Bulldogs finish seventh at the 2018 Midlands Championships
Four 'Dogs placed in the top eight in their respective weight classes helping Fresno State place seventh as a team at the Midlands Championships last weekend.
Leading the way was a pair of fourth-place finishes from Hemauer and Nevills while Olivas and Josh Hokit at 197 pounds each placed seventh.
Hemauer won four matches while knocking off No. 5 Christian LaFragola from Brown twice. Nevills received three medical forfeits on Sunday to advance all the way to the third place match where he fell to No. 6 seed Matt Stencel from Central Michigan, 10-5.
Olivas claimed four wins with a technical fall and a fall on Sunday pinning Henry Pohlmeyer of South Dakota State in 4:12 on Sunday in his seventh-place match. Hokit claimed a team-high six wins after losing his opening round match to Tanner Sloan, an unattached wrestler from South Dakota State, with four straight decisions on Saturday, a overtime win to start Sunday and a fall over Brett Perry of Buffalo in the seventh place match.
Select Bulldogs compete at Reno Tournament of Champions
Eight Bulldogs overall, three attached and five unattached, competed at the 2018 Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 20 at the Reno Events Center with redshirt freshman Jacob Wright, competing unattached, was the 'Dogs highest place finisher placing third at 157 pounds.
Additionally, redshirt junior 174-pounder Dominic Kincaid finished fifth while Hokit took sixth.
Hokit returns to the mat after finishing football season
For a second straight season, Hokit has made the quick transition from the gridiron to the wrestling mat as he in now 11-3 in his 14 matches since returning from the football field after helping the Fresno State football team defeat Arizona State, 31-20 in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 15.
The Clovis native went 6-2 at the Midlands Championships and 5-1 at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 20 and has totaled eight wins by decision, a major decision, a technical fall and a fall while his two of his three losses came by decision and was pinned by Jacob Warner of Iowa.
Hokit, who went 9-8 last season at 197 pounds and finished fifth at the Big 12 Championships, came up only one place short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships a year ago and the Mountain West champion in football looks to add being an NCAA Championship qualifier to his resume this March.
Pledge for Pins (Current count: 24)
Pledges for pins is designed to help support the Fresno State Wrestling Program. Proceeds will benefit the Fresno State Wrestling Fund for Excellence along with a portion contributing to the Valley Regional Training Center -- a nonprofit organization that supports Fresno State Wrestling.
It works like this, for example, if you pledge $5 per pin and the team accumulates 40 pins during the season, your pledge will be $200. Throughout the season, pins and pledges will be recorded and a letter will be mailed with your pledge amount and payment information.
