Olivas named Second-Team Academic All-Big 12

Redshirt sophomore Khristian Olivas of Fresno State Wrestling was named Second-Team Academic All-Big 12 on Wednesday morning, as announced by the conference office.
IRVING, Texas - Redshirt sophomore Khristian Olivas of Fresno State Wrestling was named Second-Team Academic All-Big 12 on Wednesday morning, as announced by the conference office.
The lone Bulldog honored on the Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling team, Olivas was one of 88 student-athletes named to the two teams with 63 student-athletes earning first team honors and 25 being named to the second team.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or better while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshman and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percentage of participation are also eligible.
Olivas, a communication major, put together a stellar season on the mat for the 'Dogs as he enters this weekend's Big 12 Championships with a 25-5 overall record. He has picked up nine wins by decision, eight by major decision, five by fall and one by technical fall.
"It is great for Khristian to be honored for his hard work in the classroom as well as on the mat," said head coach Troy Steiner.
Entering the Big 12 Championships as the No. 3 seed at 149 pounds, Olivas and the 'Dogs head to Tulsa, Oklahoma looking to earn berths to the 2018 NCAA Championships this weekend at the BOK Center.
