Despite jumping out to a 9-1 lead, the Diamond 'Dogs suffered a heartbreaking 12-11 loss to Nevada in walk-off fashion on Saturday night at Peccole Park.
Holding an 11-10 heading lead into the bottom of the ninth, a double by Nevada center fielder Cole Krzmarzick tied the game at 11-11 and after two strikeouts from Bulldog relief pitcher Ryan Jensen, Wolf Pack freshman third baseman Joshua Zamora came through with a two-out single through the right side giving Nevada the walk-off victory.
Fresno State (26-20, 11-15 MW), who suffered their third straight loss, pounded out 16 hits in the contest for its most in a game since April 14 against San Jose State.
Junior second baseman Jeremiah Burks matched his career-high with four hits, all singles, while driving in an RBI and scoring two runs.
Senior shortstop Korby Batesole added three hits and scored a pair of runs while four other 'Dogs tallied two hits apiece. Freshman outfielder Nate Thimjon had both of the 'Dogs two extra-base hits hitting his second triple and third home run of the season.
Junior outfielder Zach Ashford extended his on-base streak to 48 games (watch) and his hitting streak to 19 games finishing the night with a single, RBI, run scored and a walk.
On the mound, Jensen was the tough-luck loser despite coming up with three big strikeouts in his inning of work. A trio of freshman hurlers combined to toss the first 7.2 innings as Jaime Arias got his seventh start of the season and after entering the game only allowing 12 earned run all season in 56.2 innings, gave up nine earned runs in four innings.
Jamison Hill worked two shutout innings before giving way to Nikoh Mitchell who threw 1.2 innings allowing a pair of hits and an unearned run.
How It Happened
After being shutdown for only two runs through its first two games of the week, the Bulldog offense found new life scoring a first-inning season-high driving in five runs in the top of the first off Nevada (24-19, 16-6 MW) starter Dalton Gomez.
Batesole, Burks and Zach Presno hit three straight singles to load the bases for JT Arruda who came through with an RBI single (watch) to get the 'Dogs on the board.
With the bases remaining loaded, Thimjon followed by unleashing on a 1-0 pitch to dead center for his first career grand slam (watch).
The Wolf Pack answered back with one run in the bottom of the first with a double to right-center by left fielder Grant Fennell to cut the 'Dogs lead to 5-1.
The 'Dogs kept the hot offense going in the second inning going for five more hits and scoring four more runs to take a commanding 9-1 lead. After Ashford's single extended his on-base and hitting streaks, Batesole singled to put runners on the corner for Burks who drilled a RBI single (watch) through the left side to score Ashford.
A Presno RBI single through the left side (watch) and an Arruda RBI single through the right side (watch) followed to put the 'Dogs up 8-1 and Thimjon added a sacrifice fly (watch) to round out the scoring in the second.
Nevada refused to go away tying the game at 9-9 using a five-run bottom of the third and a three-run fourth to erase the 'Dogs eight-run lead.
The Wolf Pack got an RBI single by first baseman Dillan Shrum and a grand slam by designated hitter Mike Echavia in the third to cut the visitors lead to 9-6 and scored three more on a pair of home runs in the fourth getting a two-run shot by Zamora and a solo shot by catcher Kaleb Foster.
The Bulldogs answered back with a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Ashford (watch) and added another run in the sixth on a RBI triple down the left field line by Thimjon (watch).
The Wolf Pack made it a one-run contest at 11-10 in the bottom of the seventh taking advantage of a Bulldog throwing error as Echavia came around to score on a single to right field by Krzmarzick.
After the 'Dogs advanced runners to third in both the eighth and ninth, but were unable to come up with any runs, Nevada came through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth for the win.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's highly-entertaining game....
"They answered back off a heartbreaker last night and came out firing and really played all the way to the end. Jaime learned a valuable lesson today about pitching in this league and getting the ball down and he has been fantastic about that all year and today he couldn't get it done and is a valuable freshman lesson. A lot of guys learning on the job and a lot of clutch hits from freshman and we just have to keep grinding. They have emptied their tank all three games this week and really all year and we have played great and to come up short is tough, but we will come out tomorrow and try and get a win."
