Diamond 'Dogs unable to complete comeback dropping series finale at Nevada, 12-11

A six-run deficit was too much for the Diamond 'Dogs to overcome on Sunday afternoon at Peccole Park as Fresno State dropped the series finale to Nevada, 12-11.
Fresno State (26-21, 11-16 MW) nearly rallied back from a 10-4 deficit to force extra innings falling one run short as the tying run was left on second base in the top of the ninth inning.
The second straight high-scoring affair between the 'Dogs and Nevada (25-19, 17-6 MW), the 'Dogs put together another outstanding performance from the plate smacking 16 hits for a second straight contest.
Junior outfielder Zach Ashford, who extended his on-base streak to 49 games with a leadoff single (watch) and hitting streak to 20 games, had a career day from the plate going for a career-best four hits coming a triple shy of the cycle finishing with two singles, a double and a home run.
Redshirt freshman third baseman JT Arruda matched his season-high with three hits adding a double while scoring three runs and driving in an RBI. Freshman Nate Thimjon and Zach Presno added home runs as the Bulldogs now have 45 as a team this season.
On the mound, seven 'Dogs saw action as redshirt freshman right-hander Oscar Carvajal made his first start since March 11 lasting 2.2 innings before giving way to Jamison Hill. Tiegen Jones, Isaiah Davis, JJ Santa Cruz, Nikoh Mitchell and Ryan Jensen rounded out the Bulldog hurlers.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs jumped on the scoreboard first in the top of the second on a Emilio Nogales two-run double (watch) before Nevada answered back with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
A Jeremiah Burks sacrifice fly (watch) and a Miles Tomczak double down the right field line (watch) gave the 'Dogs a 4-3 lead, but the lead was short-lived as the Wolf Pack put a second straight three-run frame up in the bottom of the third. An RBI groundout by Fresno native Weston Hatten tied the game and a wild pitch along with Dillan Shrum stealing home gave the Wolf Pack two more runs and a lead they would not surrender.
Nevada extended its lead to 10-4 with a four-run bottom of the fourth as the 'Dogs had to use three pitchers in the frame, but the 'Dogs refused to go away scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Wolf Pack lead to 10-7.
A Nolan Dempsey RBI single to right-center (watch) brought home Arruda and Thimjon followed with a home run for a second straight game with a two-run shot to left-center (watch).
The 'Dogs continued to chip away at the Nevada lead scoring a run in the top of the sixth on a Torin Goldstein RBI infield single (watch) to make it 10-8.
A two-run home run to left field by catcher Kaleb Foster put Nevada in the lead at 12-8, but as they did all series long, Fresno State would not go away scoring three runs in the final two innings to make the game a nail-bitter down the stretch.
Ashford hit only his second home run of the season, third of his career, (watch) and Arruda added an RBI single (watch) to right-center to score Goldstein in the eighth before Presno's two-out solo home run to left field in the top of the ninth (watch) made it a one-run game.
With Ashford following Presno with his 17th double of the season, Korby Batesole followed with what appeared to be the game-tying RBI single up the middle, but Wolf Pack second baseman Keaton Smith made a diving stop and throw to get Batesole out at first base.
