The Diamond 'Dogs won their final road game of the season on Tuesday afternoon holding on to defeat CSUN, 6-3 at Matador Field.
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - With the winning run coming to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Diamond 'Dogs turned to junior right-hander Edgar Gonzalez to record the final two outs holding off CSUN for a 6-3 victory at Matador Field on Tuesday afternoon.
After the Matadors drew a pair of walks and getting a single to load the bases, Gonzalez struck out Matador left fielder Albee Weiss, who has hit 16 home runs this season, to preserve the win and record his first save of the season.
Fresno State (27-21) recorded nine hits in the contest led by a pair of base knocks from redshirt senior Torin Goldstein who finished 2-for-3 with a single, double, walk and two runs scored. Junior second baseman Jeremiah Burks finished with a single, double, two RBIs and two runs scored while Miles Tomczak and Emilio Nogales each added doubles.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Davis Moore improved to 4-2 on the season tossing five innings limiting CSUNÂ (21-26) to one hit. Fellow sophomore Ryan Jensen came on in relief to toss 3.1 innings while Gonzalez converted his first save since May 3, 2017.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs got the scoring started with a run in the top of the second as Goldstein led off with a ground-rule double to left-center and came around to score on a wild pitch. The Matadors answered back in the bottom half of the frame with a leadoff home run by third baseman Nolan Bumstead, the lone hit of the day given up by Moore.
After a scoreless third inning, the 'Dogs got back on the scoreboard in the fourth with a double to left-center by Tomczak that drove home Burks from second base and after getting on base with a single, Goldstein attempted to score from first, but was tossed out at home.
The Bulldogs continued the strong offensive showing in the fifth inning scoring four runs batting around the order scoring a pair on a double to left field by Burks and tacked on two more runs on a scorching single past the shortstop by Nate Thimjon.
The Matadors cut into the 'Dogs lead with a pair of runs off Jensen in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by catcher Ben Martz and center fielder Justin Toerner.
With the Bulldogs taking a 6-3 lead into the home half of the ninth and Jensen looking to complete a four-inning save, he was knocked out after recording one out issuing a walk and single giving way to Gonzalez.
Notes
- With the win, the 'Dogs improve to 27-21 on the season and with only six regular season games remaining are assured of no worse than a .500 regular season for the 15th time in Coach Batesole's 16 seasons at Fresno State.
- Batesole improves to 2-0 at CSUN as head coach at Fresno State as it was the 'Dogs first game in Northridge since 2007.
- Zach Ashford saw his 49-game on-base streak come to an end finishing the day 0-for-5. He had got on-base in all 45 games he had played in this season and came into Tuesday as the third-longest on-base streak in the nation. He also saw his 20-game hitting streak snapped.
- The 'Dogs finish 7-3 in midweek games this season.
- The Bulldogs finish the road portion of the regular season with a mark of 7-11.
