LOS ANGELES – Leading by one at the half, Fresno State shot a torrid 63.0 percent (17-of-27) in the second half to defeat Georgetown 82-69 in its second game of the LMU Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion. The game turned in the third quarter as the Bulldogs scored 29 points with Haley Cavinder dropping 10 of her game-high 24 in the period.
Cavinder also dished a season-high seven assists and grabbed six rebounds. The freshman point guard led a quartet of Bulldogs in double figures. Maddi Utti scored 19 and added nine rebounds. Aly Gamez and Hanna Cavinder had 12 points apiece and Wytalla Motta registered a season-high 10 points.
How It Happened
After going down eight midway through the opening quarter at 15-7, Fresno State continued to go inside to Utti as the junior scored six of the next seven points to help the 'Dogs get back to within one. Nikola Kovacikova countered with a 3-pointer for the Hoyas to push their lead back to four. Gamez pulled Fresno State back within one at 20-19, closing out the quarter with an and-one with 0.9 seconds on the clock.
Georgetown extended its advantage to five early in the second but the Bulldogs responded with 9-0 with four different players scoring as the 'Dogs took a 30-26 lead with 5:47 on the clock. The Hoyas answered with a 7-0 spurt of their own to retake the lead. The two sides traded a pair of free throws before Motta got to the bucket on back-to-back trips to end the half and put Fresno State ahead 36-35.
While Haley opened up the first half with a 3-pointer, she did one better in the second, sinking back-to-back 3's to kick-start a 10-2 run that pushed the Bulldogs' lead to 46-37. Georgetown closed to within four with 7:10 on the clock after a 3-pointer from Kovacikova but that's as close as the Bulldogs would let the Hoyas get. The 'Dogs extended their advantage to 13 during the next three minutes as Gamez dropped in seven points during a 13-5 stretch. Georgetown pulled back to within seven but the answer came from the Cavinders with six straight points from the duo, four coming from Hanna at the foul line.
Tayanna Jones knocked in a 3-pointer to open the fourth to cut the Hoyas deficit to 65-56 but again it was Haley coming up with a big shot, dropping in her fifth 3-pointer of the game to push Fresno State's lead back into double digits. The bucket started a 10-2 run that saw the lead balloon to 75-58 with 5:28 remaining. The Hoyas would get no closer than 13 during the final five-plus minutes.
