Wright finishes fifth at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite

LAS VEGAS - Redshirt sophomore 157-pounder Jacob Wright placed fifth at the 2019 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite on Saturday.
The first Bulldog to place at the prestigious tournament since heavyweight Clint Walbeck took seventh in 2004, Wright won five of the seven matches he wrestled over the two days, including two of three matches on Saturday, before receiving a medical forfeit in the fifth-place match to earn his finishing spot.
Opening the morning with a 9-4 win over unseeded Justin McCoy of Virginia, Wright stayed alive in the consolation bracket with a 4-3 upset win over No. 8 seed Payton Robb of Nebraska as a third-period escape proved to the difference in the match.
Moving on to the consolation semifinals, Wright took on No. 3 seed David Carr of Iowa State where he fell 9-0 before a medical forfeit by Oklahoma's Justin Thomas gave Wright a fifth-place finish.
Three other 'Dogs were in action on Saturday as Ricky Padilla (165 lbs.), Jackson Hemauer (174 lbs.) and Randy Gonzalez (Hwt.) each suffered losses in their first matches as they each came one win shy of placing in the top eight.
The Bulldogs placed 20th out of 32 teams in the tournament and were the seventh Big 12 team behing Northern Iowa (4th), Iowa State (6th), Oklahoma (10th), Wyoming (13th), Northern Colorado (15th) and Utah Valley (18th).
Fresno State returns to the mat a week from Sunday at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 15.
