No. 9 Bulldogs return to action at UC Davis on Saturday
FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 9 Fresno State equestrian team will return to action on Saturday after a month off as it treks north to meet with UC Davis who is in its inaugural season as a Division I equestrian team.Â
Â
This is the first time Fresno State has stayed on the west coast to compete in its home state since the 2005-06 season when the Bulldogs faced UC Davis in an exhibition in Davis on Oct. 15, 2006. That same season, the 'Dogs defeated Kansas State in a neutral site meeting in Davis on Mar. 18, 2006. Fresno State faced off with Stanford in the Regionals in Palo Alto, then moved on to the Zone 8 Championships in Sacramento for postseason competition that spring.Â
Â
Riding is scheduled to begin at noon and live stats can be followed here.Â
Â
QUICK LOOK AT THE 'DOGS
The Bulldogs have chalked up a 3-6 record this season, with key wins over UT-Martin, then-No. 4 Baylor and then-No. 9 Delaware State.Â
Â
Fresno State moved up to No. 9 in the NCEA Farnam team rankings after downing then-No. 9 Delaware State, 13-5 at the Student Horse Center on Feb. 1.Â
Â
The Bulldogs remain steady at No. 9 in the latest team rankings that were announced on Monday.Â
Â
Three Bulldogs were named UEC Riders of the Week after their opening weekend this spring. Redshirt Sophomore Nicole Campbell earned her third weekly honor in Horsemanship after going 2-0 for the 'Dogs that week. Campbell leads the Western squads with a 6-3 Horsemanship record and four MOP honors. The 'Dogs swept the Hunt Seat honors as senior Alexandra Dirickson earned her first of the season in the Flat and freshman Alivia Hart picked up her first in Equitation Over Fences.Â
Â
The NCEA released the latest Events Rankings on Feb. 20 and the 'Dogs cracked the Top 15 in all four disciplines. Fresno State sits at No. 12 in Equitation on the Flat, No. 11 in Equitation Over Fences, No. 10 in Reining and No. 4 in Horsemanship.Â
Â
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
UC Davis is in the midst of its inaugural season as a Division I program in the United Equestrian Conference. The Aggies are 1-3 on the season after defeating then-No. 9 Delaware State in their season opener on Jan. 31, 10-5. UC Davis was impressive in both Hunt Seat arenas, outscoring the Hornets 8-2 in the riding style to ultimately seal its first team win.Â
Â
The Aggie losses come from then-No. 4 Texas A&M, then-No. 8 TCU and then-No. 4 SMU; all on the road.Â
Â
Fresno State will be the second and final home meet for UC Davis this year.Â
Â
A pair of riders captured United Equestrian Conference Rider of the Week honors after the Aggies' 14-2 loss at Texas A&M. Laurel Jackson earned the honor in Reining while Sabin Marquardt was giving the nod in Equitation Over Fences, each earning the only two points for UC Davis in the meet. The duo goes down in the books after picking up the first ever program weekly recognitions.Â
