Fresno State falls to UCSB

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team fell to UCSB 4-1 at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center, Friday afternoon. Prior to the loss to the Gauchos, the Bulldogs had won 17 straight matches at home dating back to the 2016-17 season.
Fresno State falls to 4-2 (1-0 MW) on the season, and 2-1 at home.
Doubles – The Bulldogs started the match strong in doubles play with Mantas Bugailiskis and Angus Bradshaw at No. 1, Zdenek Derkas and Cem Erturk at No. 2 and Henrique Osorio playing with Cagatay Soke at No. 3.
UCSB sealed in the win at the No. 1 position 6-3. Soke and Osorio fought back at the No. 3 position to post a convincing 6-1 win. The doubles point came down to court #2. Derkas and Erturk clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over the Gauchos.
Singles – With three ranked players in the Gauchos' lineup, the momentum quickly switched to UCSB's side of the court.
UCSB tied the match when Erturk fell at the No. 6 position in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. #9 Nicolas Moreno de Alboran took the lead for the Gauchos when he defeated #118 Derkas at the No. 1 position 6-3, 6-0. UCSB extended its lead to 3-1 when #25 Joseph Guillin defeated Bradshaw 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.
The match was clinched at the No. 5 position when Soke fell to his opponent 6-1, 6-4. The matches on courts #3 and #4 were left unfinished.
What's next – Fresno State will host Cal Poly on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. PT in the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
