The Diamond 'Dogs dropped their Mountain West opener to UNLV, 4-3 in 10 innings on Friday evening at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
FRESNO, Calif. - Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the 10th inning, Fresno State was unable to come up with a clutch hit falling 4-3 to UNLV in its Mountain West opener on Friday evening at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Benett Stadium.
Fresno State (5-2, 0-1 MW) took a 3-2 lead after six innings, but a run in the eighth inning by UNLV (5-5, 1-0 MW) locked the game at 3-3 and the Rebels took the lead in the top of the 10th on a double by second baseman Duke Pahukoa.
The Bulldogs were held to nine hits in the contest with redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum matching his career-best with three hits, including smacking his first career triple to drive in a run. Redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda also matched a career-best with three hits hitting his first double of the season (watch) and scored a run.
On the mound, junior right-hander Ryan Jensen had a stellar outing tossing 6.0 innings while only allowing seven hits, two earned runs, one walk and notched a career-high 10 batters (watch).
Sophomore southpaw Jaime Arias was the tough-luck loser despite throwing 2.2 innings with three strikeouts, as it was Pahuoka's one-out double in the 10th inning that scored left fielder Grant Robbins from first that turned out to the game-winner.
How It Happened
Scoring first for the sixth time in seven games, the Bulldogs' jumped right on UNLV starter Cameron Jabara in the bottom of the first inning with a triple to right field by Tatum (watch) that scored junior catcher Carter Bins from first base to put the 'Dogs ahead 1-0.
With Jensen only allowing one hit through his first three innings of work, the Rebels finally got to the Bulldog junior the second time through the order for four hits in the frame scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Senior right fielder Max Smith smacked a two-out double down the right field line to bring in third baseman Dillon Johnson from third base and Robbins followed with a hard single right back up the middle to bring around Smith to put the visitors up 2-1.
The 'Dogs answered back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead as Bins scored on an throwing error by Johnson at third base and Arruda came around to score on a passed ball (watch) to push the Bulldogs back ahead by one run.
With redshirt freshman Kevin Larson entering the game for one batter, a walk to designated hitter Edarian Williams, that proved costly as the Rebels tied the game at 3-3 with a single to left field by catcher Jacob Godman that drove in Williams from second.
The Bulldogs were not without their opportunities to take the lead back loading the bases in the bottom of the eight for senior left fielder Auston Chastain, but was sent down swinging by Rebel pitcher Donovan McCrystal.
After being retired in order in the ninth, the 'Dogs had one final chance in the bottom of the 10th getting a leadoff single by Bins (watch), Tatum reached on a fielder's choice and a walk to first baseman Zach Presno loaded the bases for freshman pinch-hitter EJ Andrews, Jr., but the Long Beach native flew out to right field to end the game.

On tonight's game....
"It was a great game and those are two of the best pitchers in the league throwing toe-to-toe and making great pitches. Jensen got the strikeouts and the UNLV pitcher made some big pitches in the clutch as well. I thought both teams were grinding out at-bats and guys fighting it out until the last at-bat and both teams played fantastic defense. Just because you play great doesn't mean you are always guaranteed to win in this great and sometime the other team plays great."
