The Fresno State baseball team defeated No. 25 Tennessee, 10-7 in Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Diamond 'Dogs handed the Volunteers their first loss of the season, moving them to 15-1 this season.
Earlier in the day, the Bulldogs and Volunteers completed their suspended game from Saturday evening falling 13-9.
Â
Tennessee's pitching staff came in ranked No. 1 in the nation with a staff ERA of 0.94 through 13 games. The Bulldogs knocked 35 hits off of the Vols in the three-game series with 16 hits coming in Sunday's contest. Fresno State put up a total of 22 runs against Tennessee this weekend. Prior to this weekend, Tennessee had only given up 14 total runs.
Â
The last time Fresno State defeated two ranked opponents in the same season was in 2015 when the Bulldogs took down No. 8 USC and No. 21 Cal.
Â
"It feels good," said head coach Mike Batesole. "We fought hard all weekend and this team is going to beat a few more before they're done."
Â
Tennessee was one of three undefeated teams left in the nation as now only North Carolina State (15-0) and Arizona State (15-0) remain unbeaten.
Â
How it happened - Completion of Saturday Game
With game two paused on Saturday night from heavy rainfall, the Diamond 'Dogs returned to Rocky Top to determine a winner of game two. The game picked up with Fresno State at-bat, one out and two runners on. The first two Bulldogs got on base and scored a run scored while the Vols were leading 11-9. The 'Dogs would strand the bases loaded and end their chances to take the lead in the eighth.
Â
The Bulldogs gave up two runs in the home half of the eighth after a single and a couple of Bulldog errors. Jamison Hill came in and closed the inning and Tennessee took a 13-9 lead.
Â
Tatum led off in the ninth with a double and reached third on a wild pitch, but was stranded.
Â
How it happened - Game 3
35 minutes later, the 'Dogs and Vols played an entirely new ball game. Zach Ashford stepped up to the dish and smacked a lead off single, his third hit in the opening frame of the series. The Bulldogs battled at the plate and Nolan Dempsey and JT Arruda drilled back-to-back doubles off of Volunteer starting pitcher Will Neely. The Bulldogs had scored two runs before McCarthy Tatum stepped up to the plate and blasted a two-run home run clear over the left field fence to give the 'Dogs a 4-0 lead at the middle of the first.
Â
Davis Moore was Sunday's starting pitcher for the 'Dogs. Moore had a rocky start, walking the first two batters. After a chat at the mound with Bins and a deep breath, Moore was able to pick up a pair of strikeouts and force a fly out to right to end the inning.
Â
The 'Dogs were unable to score in the second, leaving two on at the end of the inning. Tennessee came out heavy in its chances, taking advantage of a base hit and a Bulldog throwing error. Tennessee trailed 2-0 before Volunteer Ammons hit a 2-run home run to left to tie the game at four apiece. The Vols would take the lead with a base hit from Soularie that brought in one run.
Â
The Diamond 'Dogs caught fire in the fourth, adding five runs on five hits. Auston Chastain led off with a base hit and EJ Andrews Jr. followed shortly after with another base knock. With runners on first and second, Ashford got his third hit of the day and tied the game as Chastain crossed the plate. Dempsey got on base and scored Andrews Jr. with a single to retake the lead. With a pair of runners on and one out, Arruda hit a hard-hit ball clear over the wall for a three-run home run to round out scoring for the 'Dogs in the frame. Fresno State put up five runs to take a 9-5 lead.
Â
Moore gave up a solo home run to Andre Lipcius in the fourth, but was able to get out of the inning without further harm done.
Â
The Bulldogs got back to work at the plate, scoring another run in the fifth with a sacrifice bunt from Ashford that drove in Nate Thimjon who singled to get on base.
Â
Fresno State returned to the field with a 10-5 lead in the middle of the fifth. Kevin Larson took over in the sixth and got two outs before loading the bases with walks. Oscar Carvajal came in relief for Larson to get the final out with a strikeout.
Â
The Bulldogs were able to keep the Vols off the board until the bottom of the seventh inning when Zach Daniels singled with two outs. The Bulldogs were unable to keep the Vols off, as an error moved Daniels to third and a base hit scored him. With the bases loaded for the second time in two innings, Carvajal got forced the ground out to end the inning.
Â
Fresno State fought and left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth. Carvajal took the mound for the first out in the eighth inning. The 'Dogs would bring in Jaime Arias to close the game. Arias dealt for the final two outs in the eighth.
Â
The Bulldogs were held off the scoreboard in the ninth, but Arias came out strong in the final at-bats for the Vols and picked up two strikeouts and a fly out to center to secure the win.
