The Bulldogs won their first midweek contest of the season on Tuesday night topping San Francisco, 8-6 at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (8-5) was powered by 10 hits from eight different players in the contest with senior center fielder Zach Ashford leading the way with his first home run and second triple of the season while scoring a career-high three runs.
Redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda added two hits and a run while sophomore first baseman Zach Presno and junior catcher Carter Bins each smacked long balls.
On the mound, the Bulldogs used the services of seven pitchers to limit San Francisco (10-6) to nine hits, only two extra-base knocks, and combined for 11 strikeouts.
Picking up his first win of the season was redshirt sophomore right-hander Oscar Carvajal who tossed 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. Redshirt freshman Kevin Larson tossed a scoreless fifth and sixth innings setting a new season-best with five strikeouts.
How It Happened
Getting only his second career start on the mound, redshirt senior McCarthy Tatum threw the first two innings of the contest allowing a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, but settled down in the second inning.
The 'Dogs picked Tatum up getting the offense started with a solo home run from Presno to right field (watch) that cut USF's lead to 2-1.
Moving off the mound and into the designated hitter role, Tatum delivered offensively in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to third base (watch) to tie the contest at 2-2. Bins, who drew a two-out walk, would come around to score on a passed ball to put the 'Dogs ahead 3-2.
With freshman right-hander Kyle Pruhsmeier keeping the Dons off the scoreboard in the third and fourth innings, the Bulldogs were back to work scoring runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out, two-run home run from Ashford (watch) that pushed the Bulldogs out in front, 5-2.
A grand slam by USF shortstop Jack Winkler to left field in the top of the seventh gave the Dons a momentary 6-5 lead, but the 'Dogs responded in the bottom of the frame with a two-run home run by Bins to left-center (watch).
The 'Dogs added one more insurance run in the eighth when Nolan Demsey came home to score (watch) after a throw by USF pitcher Grant got away from first baseman Riley Helland.
USF made one final rally attempt in the ninth inning bringing the tying run to the plate, but the Bulldogs brought in Friday night starter Ryan Jensen to retire Winkler with a groundout to preserve the win.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's victory over San Francisco.....
"It was a good team win. Pitching-wise it went just about perfect."
On the offense coming together.....
"We have not a normal day and I don't imagine there will be any normal days this weekend at Air Force, but we practice for that. We know we will see conditions like this and last weekend at Tennessee, it rained hard and was not just sprinkling. We faced the rain again tonight and did not bat an eye and just kept playing."
