Power hitters surge Diamond 'Dogs past Tigers in 17-2 win
Â
The Diamond 'Dogs scored their most runs since putting up 27 at Nevada on April 23, 2017.
Â
Davis Moore earned the win over Pacific and maintains a perfect 4-0 mark this season. The Bulldogs held Pacific scoreless for the last eight innings of the game to secure their 15-run margin of victory, also its largest since its 27-5 defeat over the Wolf Pack in 2017.
Â
How it happened
The Bulldogs came out swinging in the first inning, knocking a base hit, two doubles and a home run. Senior center fielder Zach Ashford led things off with a double to right field. Junior catcher Carter Bins followed with a double of his own, just fair down the left field line to score Ashford and give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead. Fresno State didn't stop there as redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda drew a walk and senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum stepped up and blasted a first pitch bomb over the batter's eye in left field. Tatum's second home run of the season would bring in three runs for a 4-0 Bulldog lead.
Â
Sophomore first baseman Zach Presno kept the hits rolling with a base hit and sophomore designated hitter Emilio Nogales blasted a double. Tomczak reached first on a fielding error that would score Presno and Nogales to put the Bulldogs on top, 6-0. Tomczak would make it all the way to third on walks and score on a wild pitch. Fresno State worked up a 7-0 lead at the end of the opening half.
Â
After sophomore lefty Nikoh Mitchell worked for the first two outs, Pacific scored two runs in their turn at-bat in the first on a pair of doubles, a base hit and a walk. A play to Arruda at shortstop would end the inning at leave a pair of runners stranded.
Â
The Bulldogs would score again in the fourth as Ashford made his way around on a base hit and a sacrifice, and would score on a fielder's choice play. Fresno State led 8-2 in the middle of the fourth.
Â
Bulldog pitchers Mitchell, Davis Moore and Kevin Larson worked for six scoreless innings on defense before the Bulldog bats could get to work again in the eighth.
Â
Sophomore pinch hitter Nate Thimjon led off in the eighth inning with a home run to left field, his first of the season. The 'Dogs used five hits from Ashford, Ryan Higgins, Presno, Matt Ottino and Eddie Pena to give the Bulldogs a 17-2 lead.
Â
The Bulldog pitching stayed strong as Tiegen Jones, Oscar Carvajal and Jaime Arias worked on the mound to finish out the game.
Â
The Tigers nearly tacked on runs in the home half of the eighth with a deep ball to right field, but Auston Chastain leaped for the catch over the well to prevent any runs from scoring.
Â
