Moore & Arias combine for three-hit shutout in 2-0 win at SDSU

The Diamond 'Dogs will go for the series sweep over San Diego State at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
SAN DIEGO - Behind a combined three-hit shutout from Bulldog pitchers Davis Moore and Jaime Arias, the Diamond 'Dogs defeated San Diego State, 2-0 on Saturday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
For a second straight game, Fresno State received a stellar starting pitching performance getting a career-high eight scoreless innings from Moore. The junior right-hander only allowed three hits, all singles, walked one and struck out six.
Fresno State (13-7, 4-4 MW) was held to five hits in the contest, but that was more than enough offense for the pair of Bulldog pitchers as San Diego State (14-12, 4-5 MW) was only able to muster three in the contest.
Redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum hit his third home run of the season while junior catcher Carter Bins added a pair of hits, including his fourth double of the season, and scored a key insurance run in the ninth inning.
How It Happened
A pitcher's duel throughout the entire game, neither side was able to get anything going offensively through the three innings before Tatum broke out drilling a one-out home run to left-center in the fourth inning (watch) to give the 'Dogs an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning thanks to a key strikeout by Moore, his sixth of the game, that ended the bottom of the eighth and stranded the potential tying run in scoring position at second base (watch).
The 'Dogs added a key insurance run in the top of the ninth inning as Bins led off with a double to left field and after stealing third base, he came in to score thanks to an Aztec throwing error down to third base by SDSU catcher Joe Fitzhugh (watch).
Three outs away from completing its first shutout of the season and first since April 29, 2018, Arias came in and struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Davis Moore's performance tonight.....
"Him and (Ryan) Jensen are growing up right in front of our eyes. The things they are doing they could not do last year or the year before, but they have both pitched in so many big situations that you don't see either one of them flinch in these big games anymore because they have been there. Now it is about them repeating their pitches and they have come so far and makes you proud to watch and see your guys grow."
On playing intense games against the Aztecs.....
"It is a very healthy respectful rivalry with them. Both teams players play the game right, smart and are talented and there is a lot of respect in our dugout for their coaches and players and when we get them it means a little bit more."
Notables
- It is the first shutout for Fresno State since April 29, 2018 when the 'Dogs blanked Air Force, 10-0.
- Arias' six saves this season moves him into a tie for 10th-most in a single season in program history with Dylan Lee (2016), Jake Shull (2015) and Jason Breckley (2007).
- Bins stole his second base of the season.
- Moore improves to 5-0 on the season and records his 12th career win.
