Diamond 'Dogs falter in series finale at San Diego State, 11-6

The Diamond 'Dogs return to action on Tuesday night at No. 3 Stanford at 6:05 p.m.
SAN DIEGO - The Diamond 'Dogs were unable to complete a series sweep of San Diego State on Sunday afternoon dropping the series finale, 11-6 to the Aztecs at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Fresno State (13-8, 4-5 MW) collected 10 hits in the contest led by sophomore designated hitter Emilio Nogales who matched his single-game career-high with three hits and added an RBI.
Senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey added a pair of hits, including his fifth double of the season (watch), and scored a run while junior catcher Carter Bins tallied a single, double, two runs scored, two RBIs, two walks and a stolen base.
On the mound, sophomore southpaw Nikoh Mitchell got his team-leading seventh start of the season tossing three innings allowing three hits, four runs, only one earned, and added a strikeout. Six more pitchers saw action after Mitchell with freshman Kyle Pruhsmeier leading the way with 1.2 innings while redshirt freshman Kevin Larson added 1.1 innings and redshirt sophomore Tiegen Jones added an inning of work.
How It Happened
After holding San Diego State (15-12, 5-5 MW) to four runs over the first two games of the series, the Aztecs came out on fire on Sunday scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. SDSU took advantage of a Bulldog fielding error scoring the first run on a sacrifice fly by catcher Joe Fitzhugh and added another run on a wild pitch and added a third run after the 'Dogs second fielding error of the inning.
The 'Dogs responded with a run in the top of the second on a single to right field by Nogales that got away from Aztec right fielder Jaden Fein as the error allowed Bins to score from first base (watch). The Aztecs answered back in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff home run from Fein that pushed SDSU's lead back to 4-1.
Fresno State continued to chip away at the Aztecs' lead scoring two more runs in the top of the fourth taking advantage of an SDSU throwing error down to second base by Fitzhugh that allowed redshirt sophomore JT Arruda to come home from third base to cut the SDSU lead to 4-2 (watch).
Nogales followed with an RBI single to left field driving in Bins to make it a one-run contest (watch), but that would be as close as the 'Dogs would get the remainder of the contest.
The Aztecs answered back with one run in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out single by third baseman David Alamillo to take a 5-3 lead and exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-3 advantage.
The 'Dogs made one final offensive push in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs to the cut the margin to 10-5 as Dempsey scored a run on a fielder's choice by McCarthy Tatum and Bins smacked a one-out double to right-center (watch) to drive home Tatum.
The Bulldogs made one final rally in the ninth inning scoring one run on a bases-loaded walk by Bins that scored Zach Ashford to make it 11-6 and with the bases loaded for Nogales with two outs, the San Jose native went down on strikes to end the game.
