The Diamond 'Dogs fell at No. 2 Stanford, 2-0 on Tuesday and head to Oregon for a four-game series in Eugene starting Thursday.
STANFORD, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs went toe-to-toe in a pitcher's duel with the nation's second-ranked team on Tuesday evening at Stanford falling 2-0 to the Cardinal at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
Fresno State (13-9), who played its third ranked foe of the season, was held without an extra-base hit for only the fifth time this season as five Bulldogs combined for five singles in the contest. In addition, senior center fielder Zach Ashford drew two walks to increase his team lead to 18 on the season.
On the mound, eight different 'Dogs saw action with redshirt senior McCarthy Tatum getting his third start of the season and responded by tossing a career-high 3.0 innings while limiting Stanford to two hits and added two strikeouts.
Stanford (19-3) was only able to muster five total hits themselves off of Bulldog pitching while the Fresno State pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts.
How It Happened
Despite the Bulldogs outhitting Stanford four to two through the first five-and-half innings of the contest, the Cardinal used a pair of doubles, a walk and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to all the scoring in the ball game and take a 2-0 lead.
Designated hitter Will Matthiessen, who started the game on the mound tossing the first three innings, got the action started leading off with a double down the right field line followed by first baseman Andrew Daschbach drawing a walk to force out Bulldog pitcher Kyle Pruhsmeier.
With the 'Dogs bringing in redshirt sophomore Tiegen Jones, the southpaw was able to get the first out with a flyout to left field, but shortstop Tim Tawa lined a double down the left field line that got past the outstretched arms of Bulldog third baseman Nolan Dempsey allowing Matthiessen to score the game's first run scoring from second base. Cardinal right fielder Nick Brueser followed with a sacrifice fly to left field bringing home Daschbach for a second run.
The 'Dogs had their best opportunity to score and break up the Cardinal's shutout bid in the top of the eighth as Ashford drew a two-out walk and Dempsey followed with a single past the shortstop that sent Ashford to third base. With JT Arruda coming to the plate representing the go-ahead run, he popped up the first pitch of the at-bat to Tawa at shortstop to end the threat as the 'Dogs were sent down in order in the top of the ninth.

Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's contest at No. 2 Stanford....
"It is hard to get upset when guys are swinging hard and attacking fast balls and playing exceptional defense. We pitched really well too and that was a really good college baseball game in a great atmosphere and great facility against the No. 2 team in the country and we battled with them all the way."
