SAN JOSE, Calif. - Winning their fifth straight game and moving into sole possession of first place in the Mountain West, the Diamond 'Dogs completed a series sweep at San Jose State on Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 victory at Excite Ballpark.
Winners of nine of its last 10 contests, Fresno State (24-12, 11-6 MW) slugged out 11 hits on Saturday getting two-hit performances from a trio of 'Dogs in junior catcher Carter Bins, redshirt sophomore JT Arruda and sophomore designated hitter Emilio Nogales.
Bins smacked his fourth home run of the season while Arruda had a pair of singles to go along with a walk and run scored. Finally, San Jose native Nogales had a pair of singles, drove in two runs and scored a run.
On the mound, sophomore left-hander Nikoh Mitchell notched his second win of the season tossing a season-high 6.1 innings while limiting San Jose State (18-22, 12-9 MW) to three hits, one earned run, two walks and seven strikeouts.
Redshirt freshman Kevin Larson came in to get the final two outs of the seventh inning before giving way to redshirt junior Ryan Sullivan for the final two innings as the right-hander limited the Spartans to one hit to earn his first save of the season.
How It Happened
Scoring in the first inning for the seventh straight game, Nogales gave the 'Dogs an early lead in the top of the first inning with a two-out, two-run RBI single to right field (watch) bringing in both Arruda and McCarthy Tatum.
Spartan shortstop Aaron Pleschner drove in San Jose State's lone run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning to cut the 'Dogs lead to 2-1. Center fielder Brandon Peterson was able to get on base with a single to left-center and moved around the bases stealing both second and third.
Holding on to a one-run lead, sophomore catcher Zach Presno gave the 'Dogs some breathing room with a two-out, two-strike single through the left side in the sixth inning (watch) driving in both Nogales and Ryan Higgins for a 4-1 lead.
The 'Dogs tacked on two more runs in the game adding one on a Nolan Dempsey RBI double down the left field line in the seventh inning (watch) that put the 'Dogs up four runs and Bins' solo home run in the ninth (watch) rounded out the scoring.
The Spartans did threaten to cut into the Bulldogs' four-run lead in the bottom of the eighth putting runners at first and second with no outs, but Sullivan came on in relief of Larson and got three straight putouts to strand runners at the corners.
Quotes
Assistant Coach Ryan Overland
On the Bulldogs' pitching performance on Saturday in the series finale win over SJSU....
"With any series, you get to the last game, you are just trying to get 27 outs and Nikoh Mitchell came out and gave us six strong innings and Kevin Larson came in and got a couple big outs and Ryan Sullivan came in and got the save which is just what we needed."
On the confidence growing in the pitching staff...
"It starts with the guys starting the game and they have been strong and then working backwards, Jaime Arias locking down the ninth inning and Oscar Carvajal working the eighth inning and especially playing as many games as we did in the short amount of time, a lot of guys got opportunities to get some outs and they all know their roles and are just going out and getting outs."
On the Red Wave coming out to support all weekend long in San Jose....
"It was great to have all the support here and it is great for the guys from the Bay Area to have their families out here watching them. We just have to keep playing good baseball like we have and keep focusing on playing like we have."
