Bulldogs fall in wire-to-wire meeting with San Diego State
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Fresno State lacrosse team dropped it's final regular season game to San Diego State on Saturday afternoon, 16-15, at Aztec Lacrosse Field.
Â
The Bulldogs were led by junior midfielder Marina Mayo who tied her career-best with five goals against the Aztecs. Junior attacker Jordyn Pandolfo contributed with a hat trick while Hannah Krats and Tiffiny Wallace had a pair of goals each. Ryleigh Bone, Sydney Skalstad and Lauren Kiszely each added one apiece.
With the loss on Saturday, the 'Dogs secured the three-seed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament, hosted by UC Davis, April 26-28. The third-seeded Bulldogs and second-seeded Aztecs will square off once again in the semifinal match on April 26 for the right to face the No. 1 seed UC Davis in the championship match on April 28.
Â
How it happened
Fresno State was out to a 4-0 start over the Aztecs with a four goal run in the first six minutes of game action. SDSU scored its first goal with 23:30 to go in the opening period, but the 'Dogs answered back with back-to-back goals from Mayo and Skalstad to give Fresno State a 6-1 lead.
Â
San Diego State capped the first half outscoring Fresno State 7-4, which included a 4-0 run over the final 8:53, to cut the Bulldogs' lead to just two at halftime, 10-8.
Â
The Aztecs and 'Dogs traded a pair of goals in the opening minutes of the second half before the Aztecs would score three unanswered goals, to make it a 13-12 game in favor of the home team with 17:43 to go in regulation.
Â
Mayo would tie the game at 13-13 at the 16:18 mark, but the Aztecs pulled away scoring the next three goals to take a 16-13 lead. Fresno State held SDSU scoreless over the final 10 minutes while Mayo and Lauren Kiszely would score two more for the Bulldogs to bring the game within one, but it wasn't enough for the 'Dogs to overcome. Mayo had a shot attempt in the waning seconds, but it was saved to keep the game from going into overtime.
