The Diamond 'Dogs saw their five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday evening with a 10-6 setback against San Diego State. Senior Day starts on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
Fresno State (31-14-1, 16-8-1 MW), who continues to lead the Mountain West by 1.5 games, was limited to nine hits on the night while Bulldog pitching allowed San Diego State (31-20, 15-10 MW) to its second-highest hitting total in a game this season with 18.
A trio of Bulldogs tallied a pair of hits apiece with senior center fielder Zach Ashford picking up his team-leading 22nd multi-hit game of the season with two singles, scored a run and drove in two RBI.
For the 13th time this season, the 'Dogs hit multiple home runs in a game with both redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda and sophomore designated hitter Emilio Nogales each smacking a long ball. Arruda added a single while senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
On the mound, junior right-hander Davis Moore made his 12th start picking up the no-decision as he went 4.0 innings for his second-shortest outing of the season. Moore allowed 10 hits, five earned runs, one walk and struck out four before giving way to five Bulldog relievers.
Redshirt freshman Kevin Larson was a bright light for the bullpen tossing a season-high 3.2 innings and struck out four while the other four relivers each just tossed 0.1 inning.Â
How It Happened
For the second consecutive night, San Diego State was able to get runners on base in the top of the first loading the bases with no outs before Moore was able to get a force out at home and back-to-back strikeouts (watch) to leave the bases full of Aztecs.Â
The Aztecs had better luck in the second inning scoring two runs getting a RBI double down the left field line by catcher Ryan Orr and a RBI fielder's choice by center fielder Julian Escobedo.
The 'Dogs tied up the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the frame getting singles by Dempsey and left fielder Nate Thimjon (watch) before Ashford delivered a two-out, two-run RBI single up the middle (watch).
San Diego State took a 3-2 lead in the third on a RBI single to left field by right fielder Mike Jarvis, but a 4-6-3 double play got the 'Dogs out of bases-loaded, one-out jam (watch).
The Bulldogs answered right back taking its lone lead of the game with a three-run bottom of the third. Arruda led off with his sixth long ball of the season with a shot to left-center (watch) to knot the game at 3-3 before Nogales blasted hit his second homer of 2019 to right-center for a 5-3 advantage.
The lead was short-lived as the Aztecs answered right back in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by shortstop Angelo Armenta to right field.
With the game tied at five apiece through four innings, SDSU scored a crucial run in the top of the fifth capitalizing on a Bulldog fielding error in left field by Thimjon that allowed Orr to score from second.
The Aztecs extended their lead to 9-5 with three more runs in the sixth getting RBI singles from both Jarvis and Orr. The 'Dogs were able to cut into the lead with one run in the bottom of the seventh as Ashford came home on a throwing error by Orr down to second base, but that was as close as Fresno State got imposing little threat over their last two times at-bat.
SDSU added one more run in the ninth as the 'Dogs allowed an opponent to score in double-digits for only the third time this season.
