The Diamond 'Dogs defeated UNLV, 11-1 in a seven-inning run-rule victory on Friday to advance to the Mountain West Championship game on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Fresno State (37-14-1) was dialed in offensively collecting 13 hits and got a second-straight standout performance on the mound by its starting pitcher. Following Ryan Jensen's eight-inning, 10-strikeout performance on Thursday, junior Davis Moore followed it up with a complete game limiting UNLV to three hits, one run, two walks and struck out six to improve to 9-1 on the season.
Leading the way from the plate for the 'Dogs was sophomore right fielder Nate Thimjon who matched his career high with three hits, drove in three RBI and scored two runs.
Senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey and sophomore designated hitter Emilio Nogales each added two hits apiece as each tallied a double.
Balanced throughout the lineup, senior center fielder Zach Ashford and junior catcher Carter Bins also each tallied doubles while redshirt senior McCarthy Tatum put the exclamation mark on the contest with his 12th home run of the season smacking a grand slam in the seventh inning.
Eight of the nine Bulldogs who had an at-bat on Friday registered at least one hit with shortstop JT Arruda being the lone 'Dog not to have a hit, but he did extend his on-base streak to 22 with an intentional walk.
How It Happened
Scoring first for the 35th time this season, the 'Dogs tallied three runs in the bottom of the second for a early 3-0 lead.
Dempsey collected a one-out single to left field, moved to second on a groundout and third on a wild pitch coming home to score on a RBI double down the right field line (watch) by Thimjon. First baseman Zach Presno followed with a two-run blast to center field (watch) for his ninth home run of the season.
After Ashford was stranded at third base in the third inning after a leadoff double, the 'Dogs added two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Nogales smacked a one-out double to left-center and Thimjon kept his hot bat going with a RBI single through the left side (watch) to drive in Nogales for a 4-0 lead. With Presno keeping the bottom of the 'Dogs lineup hot with a single, nine-hole hitter and left fielder Jeff Jamison singled to second base (watch) to drive home Thimjon.
The Rebels were able to scratch across one run in the top of the seventh on a RBI groundout by right fielder Max Smith, but the 'Dogs slammed the door with a six-run bottom of the seventh.
A walk to Ashford followed by a double by Bins put two runners in scoring position for Arruda, who was intentionally walked. That loaded the bases for Tatum, the Tony Gwynn Co-Player of the Year, who unleashed on a ball to center field (watch) for a grand slam and a 9-1 lead.
Two runs away from a 10-run run-rule victory, the 'Dogs finished it out with a RBI single by Nogales (watch) and Thimjon capped it off with a single up the middle (watch) to clinch the walk-off win.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Davis Moore's performance....
"Outstanding fastball command. He was throwing his breaking ball for a strike and had terrific command of those two pitches."
On the 'Dogs staying hot in the Mountain West Tournament....
"I like the way we have been playing defense and that makes it very easy to pitch. The guys are out there pitching with so much confidence that now if the ball is hit, there is a good chance it will be an out. He can pitch to location and doesn't have to strike guys out and can be really terrific at the routine play."
