With Senior Day approaching this Sunday, GoBulldogs.com sat down with the five Diamond 'Dog seniors to get a deeper look at their Fresno State experience and their time as members of the Fresno State baseball team.
The first Bulldog to be featured this week is infielder Eddie Pena. Pena is a junior college transfer from Fresno City College and has spent the last two years in a Bulldog uniform.
Pena has seen action in 22Â games as a Bulldog, appearing in eight contests during his first season and 14 as a senior. He made his first career start on March 1 this spring at home against UNLV and has two career hits, two RBI and three runs scored.
The Woodlake, Calif. native spent his first pair of seasons with the Fresno City Rams under head coach Ron Scott. Pena was a two-time All-CVC Conference award winner for his accomplishments with the Rams.
GoBulldogs.com caught up with Pena to learn about his time as a Bulldog and see what advice he has for younger athletes.
Q: What skills has baseball taught you that can be used off the field?
Pena: "Definitely to be a good teammate and help others. It has also given me the mindset to work hard for everything that you want."
Â
If you had to be attached to one teammate for 24 hours, who would it be and why?
Pena: "Nolan Dempsey, because we have a lot of classes together and I am basically already with him all of the time."
Â
What is one thing that Coach Batesole says that you will always remember?
Pena: "There is a lot. He calls me 'pee wee' a lot because I am small. I would probably have to say that is what I will remember the most."
Â
Which one of your past or present teammates has influenced you the most?
Pena: "Probably McCarthy Tatum, he is my roommate this year and he has really helped me out. I knew him coming in to Fresno State, so he was my guy to talk to if I needed to talk to somebody."
Â
Do you have any advice for young players?
Pena: "Work hard. Baseball doesn't last forever, so try to make the most of it while you can."
Â
What is your favorite part about being a Bulldog?
Pena: "The atmosphere, the fight that we have and the good chemistry that we have is a good time."
Â
How would you describe this senior class?
Pena: "We are grinders. The whole team likes to grind, fight and play every game hard."
Â
What has been your favorite stadium to play at? Why?
Pena: "Right here at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium. This is our home field and it is always good to be here."
