The Diamond 'Dogs move on to the Stanford Regional final on Saturday with a 7-2 win over Stanford at Sunken Diamond.
"I thought both starting pitchers were outstanding tonight and I was thinking whoever foun their changeup first was going to last the longest and Moore got some huge outs with it," said head coach Mike Batesole after the 'Dogs win. "To come into this ball park and against a talented team like this that is superiorly coached is a big win because now you only need one more win instead of three."
Fresno State (40-14-1), who advanced to its first NCAA Tournament regional final since 2008 with the win, continued its torrid offense tallying 11 hits in the contest. Leading the way was sophomore designated hitter Emilio Nogales who matched his career-high with three hits and three RBI and used a key two-run double in the sixth inning to break open a 1-1 tie game.
Redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum added two hits, including a double, two RBI and scored a run while senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey powered the 'Dogs with eighth home run of the season and added two runs scored.
For the second consecutive night, Fresno State got an outstanding performance from its starting pitcher as Moore made life tough for Stanford all night long. The Rancho Cucamonga native, who improved to 10-1 on the season with the win, tossed 6.2 innings while limiting the Cardinal to two hits, one earned run, three walks and eight strikeouts.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Oscar Carvajal finished out the final 2.1 innings allowing two hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out four.
How It Happened
For only the 18th time in 55 games this season, the 'Dogs let their opponent score first as Stanford senior right fielder Brandon Wulff smacked his team-leading 18th home run of the season to put the Cardinal ahead 1-0.
After the 'Dogs were held scoreless through the first three innings, Dempsey drilled a two-out solo home run to left-center (watch) in bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1.Â
A scoreles fifth inning gave way to a crucial sixth inning that proved to be the turning point for the Bulldogs on Saturday. The 'Dogs poured in three runs to take a 4-1 lead as catcher Carter Bins smacked a leadoff double to center field, his 14th of the season, which was followed by a walk to shortstop JT Arruda. A single through the right side by Dempsey loaded the bases with one out for Nogales.
The sophomore designated hitter delivered in a big way with a two-run double down the left field line driving home both Bins and Arruda to give the 'Dogs a 3-1 lead. The 'Dogs tacked on one more run in the frame with a RBI ground out by right fielder Nate Thimjon that scored Dempsey to push the Bulldogs' lead to 4-1.
The 'Dogs extended their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out, two-run double down the right field line by Tatum (watch) that added key insurance runs. The Bulldogs were not done scoring tacking on one more run as Nogales drove in his third run of the night with a single back up the middle to drive in Tatum.
Stanford scored the final run of the game with a solo home run by third baseman Nick Bellafronto that made the final score 7-2 in favor of the 'Dogs.
