The Diamond 'Dogs return to the NCAA Tournament on Friday facing UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond on ESPN3.
FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Baseball will make its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2012 on Friday evening at the Stanford Regional hosted at Sunken Diamond. Earning the No. 3 seed in the regional, the Diamond 'Dogs will take on No. 2 seed UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.

Bulldog Headlines
UCSB enters Friday's contest against the Bulldogs with a 45-9 overall record and won the Big West with a 19-5 conference record. The Gauchos, who lost two weekend series all season, are coming off a series loss at home to Cal Poly.
UCSB went an impressive 27-3 at home while posting a 18-6 mark on the road and went on a 13-game winning streak from April 28 through May 19. The Gauchos led the Big West with a .299 average from the plate as a team and in scoring averaging 7.2 runs per game.
Junior catcher Eric Yang leads the team and ranks second in the Big West in average (.383), hits (77) and on-base percentage (.492). Senior catcher Thomas Rowan has started all 54 games and has smacked 13 home runs and driven in 46 RBI.
On the mound, UCSB ranks sixth in the nation with a 3.21 ERA and is seventh in the country with a 3.11 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 491 strikeouts to 158 walks while holding opponents to a .224 batting average.
Junior LHP Ben Brecht leads the team with a 10-1 mark and tops the team with 101 strikeouts in 88.2 innings. Sophomore LHP Jack Dashwood is 9-2 with a 2.17 ERA and has 90 strikeouts in 87.0 innings.
The 'Dogs and Gauchos last met in 2018 with the two teams splitting a pair of meetings as each won at home. The teams have only met twice in the postseason, coming all the way back in 1952 in the Diamond 'Dogs first two postseason games in program history.
A look at No. 1 seed Stanford (Stanford leads all-time series, 87-50)
Stanford comes into the NCAA Tournament with a 41-11 overall record and finished second in the Pac-12 with a 22-7 mark. The Cardinal, who went 21-7 at home and 17-4 on the road and 3-0 at neutral site.
Stanford is hitting .281 as a club to rank fifth in the Pac-12 and is fourth in the conference averaging 6.8 runs per game. The Cardinal lead the league in sacrifice flies (37) and stolen bases (58). Redshirt junior infielder Duke Kinnamon leads Stanford with a .327 average from the plate while senior outfielder Brandon Wulff (17) and junior Andrew Daschbach (16) have combined for 33 home runs.
On the mound, Stanford sports a 3.47 ERA, 11th in the nation, with a 2.76 strikeout-to-walk ratio with 439 strikeouts to 159 walks while holding opponents to a .249 batting average.Â
Freshman right-hander Alex Williams leads the tea with a 2.48 ERA and along with junior southpaw Erik Miller, they lead the team with seven wins apiece. Miller has a team-high 85 strikeouts while sophomore right-hander Brendan Beck has thrown a team-leading 78.1 innings.
Stanford won the latest meeting earlier this season, 2-0 at home with the 'Dogs last win over the Cardinal coming on March 2, 2012 in Fresno, 7-4.
A look at No. 4 seed Sacramento State (FS leads all-time series, 118-32)
Sacramento State enters the NCAA Tournament with a 39-23 overall record and won the WAC Tournament winning six straight elimination games last weekend. The Hornets went 22-7 at home, but were only 11-15 on the road with a 6-1 neutral mark. Sacramento State is hitting .235 as a team and is led by junior outfielder Matt Smith with a .318 average who also leads the team in runs (42), hits (69), triples (4) and slugging percentage (.479).
On the mound, the Hornets have a 3.69 ERA, tops in the WAC, and have a conference leading strikeout-to-walk ratio at 2.52 with 519 K's to 206 walks. Sophomore right-hander Scott Randall leads the team with eight wins and a 2.50 ERA to go along with 75 strikeouts in 90.0 innings.
The 'Dogs last played the Hornets in 2017 winning two games and have won five of the last six meetings.
Diamond 'Dogs win first Mountain West Tournament Championship
The 'Dogs won their first Mountain West Tournament Championship title last Saturday with a 12-6 win over UNLV at the MW Championship in Reno. It was the 'Dogs first tournament title since 2012 and the seventh for head coach Mike Batesole who won the WAC Tournament in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 & 2012.
Bulldogs win second Mountain West regular season title in last four seasons
The Bulldogs' won their 35th conference title in program history on May 16 at UNLV with a 7-0 win over the Rebels. It is the 'Dogs seventh regular season title under head coach Mike Batesole after winning WAC titles in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and a MW title in 2016. It is the fifth time in Coach Batesole's 17 years at Fresno State he has won both the conference's regular season and tournament titles in the same season joining 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011.
Fresno State sitting in top 25 in three national polls
The 'Dogs are ranked in the top 25 in three national polls this week after being tabbed No. 21 by Baseball America and No. 23 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and NCBWA.
Bulldogs earn eight All-MW honors & Batesole named MW Coach of the Year
The Bulldogs had eight student-athletes earn All-MW honors on May 23 with six being named to the first team and two to the second team. In addition, Coach Batesole was named the MW Coach of the Year for the second time in the Mountain West while McCarthy Tatum earned the Tony Gwynn Co-Player of the Year and Ryan Jensen was named the MW Pitcher of the Year. Tatum, Jensen, Nolan Dempsey, Zach Ashford, Jaime Arias and JT Arruda earned first-team honors while Carter Bins and Davis Moore were named to the second team.
Mountain West Player of the Week honors
The Bulldogs earned three Mountain West Player of the Week honors in 2019 with senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey earning the award twice and redshirt sophomore shortstop JT Arruda picking up the honors once on May 13.

Jensen & Moore combined 20-2 on the season
Junior right-handed starters Ryan Jensen and Davis Moore have been a dominant 1-2 punch for the Bulldogs combining for 20 of the 'Dogs 38 wins this season. With Jensen leading both the MW and nation with 11 wins, Moore is not far behind with nine victories ranking second in the MW and 22nd nationally. Jensen has won eight straight starts and has posted a 2.31 ERA with 69 strikeouts in 58.1 innings while holding opponents to a .207 average and only allowed 13 walks in that stretch.
Road Warriors
The Bulldogs found great success away from Fresno this season posting a 23-6 mark in road/neutral site games. The 'Dogs are 18-6 in true road contests played at the opponents' field and 5-0 in neutral site games.
The Bulldogs, who have won 13 straight road games coming into the NCAA Tournament, the second-longest active streak in the nation, last suffered a road loss at Oregon on April 6 falling in a doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 8-7.
'Dogs find midweek success
The Bulldogs found great success in midweek games this season sporting a 7-1 record notch ing wins over San Francisco, Pacific (2x), CSU Bakersfield (2x) and Cal Poly (2x). Their only stumble came at then-No. 2 ranked Stanford falling 2-0 on April 2.
Second-best regular season winning percentage under Coach Batesole
The 'Dogs completed their second-best regular season winning percentage under Coach Batesole finishing with a .707 mark. Only the 'Dogs 2011 team finished with a better mark at 37-14 (.725). The 'Dogs 38 wins set them only two wins shy of their 19th season in program history with 40 victories, most recently done in 2011.
Bulldog pitching staff dominant
The 'Dogs lead the MW in ERA (3.72), opposing batting average (.253), earned runs allowed (193), hits allowed (452), walks allowed (186), doubles allowed (68), triples allowed (4), home runs allowed (28) and saves (17). In addition, the 'Dogs have given up three runs or less in 25 of their 53 games and are 23-2 in those contests.
Magic number eight
Fresno State has had great success this year when reaching eight runs sitting at 22-1. Their loss came on March 9 at then-No. 25 Tennessee in a 13-9 loss to the Volunteers.
Scoring first is key
Another key to the 'Dogs recent success has been scoring first. On the season, the 'Dogs are 31-5 when scoring first and 22-5 when scoring in the first inning. On the year, the 'Dogs scored a total of 82 runs in the first inning, 35 more than the next closest inning, the fourth and sixth innings (47).
Arruda & Tatum streaking
Both JT Arruda and McCarthy Tatum bring in on-base streaks longer than 20 game into the NCAA Tournament with Arruda reaching base the last 23 games and Tatum the last 21 contests.
Arias one save shy of single-season record
All-MW First-Team selection Jaime Arias has racked up 12 saves this season and is one save shy of reaching the single-season record of 13 by Brandon Burke in 2008.Â
Ashford placing name in record book
Zach Ashford will play in his 211th career game on Friday which will place him a tie with Korby Batesole (2015-18) for No. 10 on the all-time games played list. In addition, Ashford moved into the top 10 in career hits and his 239 career hits are only four shy of ninth (Casey McGehee).
Batesole reaches 800 career win milestone & 30-win plateau
Head coach Mike Batesole reached career win number 800 on Feb. 16 in the Bulldogs' 6-3 season-opening win over Utah Valley at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium. Now in his 17th season at the helm of the Bulldogs this season, Batesole has won 581 games at Fresno State and 256 at CSUN from 1996-2002 for a total of 837 career wins. Batesole has won at least 30 games in 14 of his 17 seasons at Fresno State and in 20 of his 24 years as a Division I head coach.

The winner of the four-team Stanford regional advances to the Super Regionals and will face the winner of the Starkville Regional. Mississippi State (46-13), the No. 6 national seed, is the top seed in the regional followed by No. 2 seed Miami (39-18), No. 3 seed Central Michigan (46-12) and No. 4 seed Southern University (32-22).

Jensen has won eight straight starts and has posted a 2.31 ERA with 69 strikeouts in 58.1 innings while holding opponents to a .207 average and only allowed 13 walks in that stretch.
Road Warriors
The Bulldogs found great success away from Fresno this season posting a 23-6 mark in road/neutral site games. The 'Dogs are 18-6 in true road contests played at the opponents' field and 5-0 in neutral site games.
The Bulldogs, who have won 13 straight road games coming into the NCAA Tournament, the second-longest active streak in the nation, last suffered a road loss at Oregon on April 6 falling in a doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 8-7.
'Dogs find midweek success
The Bulldogs found great success in midweek games this season sporting a 7-1 record notch ing wins over San Francisco, Pacific (2x), CSU Bakersfield (2x) and Cal Poly (2x). Their only stumble came at then-No. 2 ranked Stanford falling 2-0 on April 2.
Second-best regular season winning percentage under Coach Batesole
The 'Dogs completed their second-best regular season winning percentage under Coach Batesole finishing with a .707 mark. Only the 'Dogs 2011 team finished with a better mark at 37-14 (.725). The 'Dogs 38 wins set them only two wins shy of their 19th season in program history with 40 victories, most recently done in 2011.
Bulldog pitching staff dominant
The 'Dogs lead the MW in ERA (3.72), opposing batting average (.253), earned runs allowed (193), hits allowed (452), walks allowed (186), doubles allowed (68), triples allowed (4), home runs allowed (28) and saves (17). In addition, the 'Dogs have given up three runs or less in 25 of their 53 games and are 23-2 in those contests.
Magic number eight
Fresno State has had great success this year when reaching eight runs sitting at 22-1. Their loss came on March 9 at then-No. 25 Tennessee in a 13-9 loss to the Volunteers.
Scoring first is key
Another key to the 'Dogs recent success has been scoring first. On the season, the 'Dogs are 31-5 when scoring first and 22-5 when scoring in the first inning. On the year, the 'Dogs scored a total of 82 runs in the first inning, 35 more than the next closest inning, the fourth and sixth innings (47).
Arruda & Tatum streaking
Both JT Arruda and McCarthy Tatum bring in on-base streaks longer than 20 game into the NCAA Tournament with Arruda reaching base the last 23 games and Tatum the last 21 contests.
Arias one save shy of single-season record
All-MW First-Team selection Jaime Arias has racked up 12 saves this season and is one save shy of reaching the single-season record of 13 by Brandon Burke in 2008.Â
Ashford placing name in record book
Zach Ashford will play in his 211th career game on Friday which will place him a tie with Korby Batesole (2015-18) for No. 10 on the all-time games played list. In addition, Ashford moved into the top 10 in career hits and his 239 career hits are only four shy of ninth (Casey McGehee).
Batesole reaches 800 career win milestone & 30-win plateau
Head coach Mike Batesole reached career win number 800 on Feb. 16 in the Bulldogs' 6-3 season-opening win over Utah Valley at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium. Now in his 17th season at the helm of the Bulldogs this season, Batesole has won 581 games at Fresno State and 256 at CSUN from 1996-2002 for a total of 837 career wins. Batesole has won at least 30 games in 14 of his 17 seasons at Fresno State and in 20 of his 24 years as a Division I head coach.

The winner of the four-team Stanford regional advances to the Super Regionals and will face the winner of the Starkville Regional. Mississippi State (46-13), the No. 6 national seed, is the top seed in the regional followed by No. 2 seed Miami (39-18), No. 3 seed Central Michigan (46-12) and No. 4 seed Southern University (32-22).
