The Diamond 'Dogs dominated UC Santa Barbara, 9-2 on Friday evening to open the NCAA Tournament at Sunken Diamond.
STANFORD, Calif. - Jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Diamond 'Dogs never looked back on Friday evening with a dominant 9-2 win over second-seeded UC Santa Barbara in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Sunken Diamond on the campus of Stanford.
Fresno State (39-14-1) tallied 14 hits in the game with senior center fielder Zach Ashford leading the way with a three-hit performance adding four runs scored, a walk and stolen base while reaching base five times in the contest.
The 'Dogs two through four hitters also tallied multi-hit games with catcher Carter Bins collecting three hits, including a double, RBI and two runs scored while shortstop JT Arruda added two hits, including a double, RBI and a run scored. Third baseman McCarthy Tatum, named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper All-American on Thursday, tacked on three hits, a double, run scored and three RBI.
The Bulldogs got a dominant pitching performance from junior right-hander starter Ryan Jensen who had a no-hitter going through 5.2 innings before a two-out single by second baseman Andrew Martinez broke up the no-hit bid. The Mountain West Pitcher of the Year and MW Tournament MVP completed 7.2 innings limiting UCSB (45-10) to four hits, two earned runs, one walk and eight strikeouts to improve to 12-1 on the season (watch). It is Jensen's ninth-straight win and eight start in a row tossing seven or more innings.
Redshirt junior right-hander Ryan Sullivan threw the final 1.1 innings allowing one hit and one walk.
How It Happened
Playing as the visiting team as the lower seeded team, the 'Dogs wasted little time getting the offense going with four consecutive hits to lead things off getting a single to left field by Ashford, a single back up the middle by Bins, a single to left field by Arruda and a bloop single to right field by Tatum that drove in Ashford to give the 'Dogs a quick 1-0 lead.
With second baseman Nolan Dempsey making the 'Dogs first out of the game, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 after a Gaucho fielding error at third base by Marcos Castanon allowed Bins to score from third base. With the bases loaded and only one out, right fielder Nate Thimjon fouled out to first base for the second out of the frame, but a two-run single to left field by first baseman Zach Presno drove in both Arruda and Tatum to extend the 'Dogs lead to 4-0. The Bulldogs tacked on one more run to make it 5-0 as Matt Ottino, who reached base on the UCSB error, came home to score before Presno was thrown out as he was picked off second base.
The Bulldogs kept the hot-hitting going in the top of the second with a one-out double to center field by Bins that drove home Ashford from first base and Arruda followed drilling a double to left field to bring in Arruda to extend the 'Dogs lead to 7-0.
A two-out double down the right field line by Tatum in the top of the fourth extended the Bulldogs' lead to 8-0 for his second RBI of the night.
With Jensen sending down the first 11 Gauchos he faced, UCSBÂ was able to get its first two baserunners in the bottom of the fourth with a hit by pitch and walk before Jensen's third strikeout got the 'Dogs of the night got him out of the jam.
UCSB broke up Jensen's shutout bid in the seventh with a pair of runs to cut the 'Dogs lead to 8-2 before the 'Dogs rounded out the scoring in the eighth with a RBI single to right-center by Tatum.
