Three Diamond 'Dogs were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings West All-Region Team on Wednesday.
Senior second baseman Nolan Dempsey and junior pitcher Ryan Jensen were selected to the First Team while redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum was a Second Team selection.
Dempsey and Jensen mark the first time since 2005 (Beau Mills and Nick Moresi) that two Bulldogs have been named to the ABCA/Rawlings West Region First Team. Fresno State, along with Arizona State and UC Santa Barbara, each had three selections to rank second behind four selections from UCLA.
Drafted in the 33rd round of the 2019 MLB Draft, Dempsey put together a standout senior season earning First-Team All-Mountain West honors and was selected to the Mountain West Championship All-Tournament Team. The San Carlos, Calif., native started all 56 games he played in this season hitting .332 from the plate, 10th in the MW, while ranking eighth in the conference in slugging percentage at .539. He ranked second in the MW with 57 RBI and smacked a team-leading 17 doubles to rank fourth in the league. He finished fifth in the conference with 117 total bases, tied for eighth in hits (72) and tied for ninth with eight home runs.
A first-round selection of the Chicago Cubs on June 3, Jensen put together a stellar junior season on the mound for the 'Dogs posting a 12-1 mark making 16 appearances, including 15 starts. The Mountain West Pitcher of the Year and Mountain West Tournament MVP, Jensen led the Mountain West with 100.0 innings pitched and ranked second in the league in strikeouts with 107. He finished fourth in the MW in opposing batting average (.217) and fifth in ERA (2.88).
A Second-Team All-America honoree by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper along with being a First-Team All-Mountain West selection, Jensen closed out his career winning his final nine starts going 9-0 with a 2.32 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 66.0 innings while only allowing 14 walks. He tallied eight consecutive starts of seven or more innings and had six starts with eight or more strikeouts.
Rounding out the Bulldogs' All-Region selections is Tatum. A 10th-round selection of the Philadelphia Phillies on June 4, the Tony Gwynn Mountain West Co-Player of the Year and First-Team All-Mountain West selection started all 57 games for the Diamond 'Dogs this season and led the MW in hits (84), RBI (77), home runs (13), total bases (143) and slugging percentage (.606).
A Third-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and a member of both the MW Championship All-Tournament and Stanford Regional All-Tournament teams, the Clovis native hit .356 from the plate this season and ranked second in the league in at-bats (236), fifth in doubles (160 and sixth in runs (54).
The teams are voted on by members of the American Baseball Coaches Association and the process is led by the ABCA NCAA Div. I All-America Committee, which is chaired by Tommy Raffo of Arkansas State University.
ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team selections are nominated for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-Americans will be announced on Saturday, June 15.
The finalists for the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I Gold Glove Team will be announced on Monday, June 17, and the Gold Glove winners in all divisions will be announced on Wednesday, June 19. In all divisions, ABCA/Rawlings National Pitchers of the Year will be announced on Monday, June 24, followed by ABCA/Rawlings National Players of the Year on Wednesday, June 26.
The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 11,000 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 76th annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 2-5, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee.
