The Bulldogs and Cardinal will play a winner-take-all game on Monday at 7 p.m. on ESPNU and 940 AM ESPN.
Fresno State (40-15-1) tallied nine hits in a wild four-hour affair that saw each team battle relentlessly. The Bulldogs recorded their 16th multi-home run game of the season as both redshirt senior third baseman McCarthy Tatum and sophomore first baseman Zach Presno smacked home runs. It was Tatum's team-leading 13th long ball of the year and his 77th RBI while it was Presno's 10th home run.
The 'Dogs spread the hits around with eight Bulldogs making up the nine base hits and got a double from left fielder Jeff Jamison, who also made a home run saving catch in the bottom of the first inning (watch).
On the mound, the 'Dogs got the 15th start of the season from sophomore southpaw Nikoh Mitchell who only lasted three innings giving up four hits, four runs, walked a career-high seven and struck out one. Sophomore right-hander Jamison Hill came in for two innings striking out two, but allowed four runs before giving way to Nik Cardinal.
The junior right-hander from Canada tossed three scoreless innings only allowing one hit and one walk while striking out a season-high six batters.
How It Happened
Playing as the visitors, the Bulldogs let Stanford score first for the second night in a row. A two-out double to left-center in the bottom of the first by designated hitter Will Matthiessen drove in right fielder Brandon Wulff from second base.
The Cardinal tacked on another run in the bottom of the second inning getting a one-out double down the right field line by center fielder Christian Robinson that scored shortstop Tim Tawa for a 2-0 lead.
The 'Dogs threatened to get on the board in the top of the third getting both center fielder Zach Ashford and catcher Carter Bins got on base with a single and walk, respectively, but shortstop JT Arruda went down on strikes.
Stanford scored for a third-straight inning tacking on two more runs for a 4-0 lead as second baseman Duke Kinamon drove in Matthiessen with a single through the right side and first baseman Andrew Daschbach was able to score after a throwing error by Mitchell on a failed pickoff attempt at third base. The Cardinal threatened for more runs loading the bases with two outs, but Mitchell was able to get left fielder Kyle Stowers to line out to second base to end the threat.
The 'Dogs quickly capitalized on Stanford's inability to cash in on more runs with a four-run fourth inning to tie the game at 4-4. Tatum led off with a shot to left-center to cut the Cardinal lead to 4-1. A walk to Matt Ottino and a single to left field by right fielder Nate Thimjon put a pair of runners on base for Presno who lifted a 1-1 pitch to right field for a three-run shot to tie the game.
With Mitchell done after three innings, Hill came on for the fourth inning and Stanford answered back with a run to take a 5-4 lead. A single back up the middle by Kinamon drove home Wulff as the Cardinal again took advantage of two more walks and a wild pitch by the Bulldogs to regain the lead.
Scoring for a fifth consecutive inning, Stanford tallied three runs in the fifth inning to take a 8-4 lead. Getting a leadoff double from Tawa, Stowers drove him in with a single to right field to move the Cardinal in front by two runs.
Robinson, who got on base by a hit by pitch moved to third on Stowers' single and came home to score on a throwing error by Bins behind the plate. The Cardinal scoring run was completed with a single to second base by catcher Maverick Handley.
The Bulldogs refused to go away quietly scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to cut Stanford's lead to 8-6. Thimjon got the scoring started reaching on a throwing error by the Cardinal shortstop and Presno walked to put a pair on base for Jamison. The fcam reshman through with a two-out double to left-center to drive in Thimjon to cut the lead to 8-5. The 'Dogs capitalized on a second Stanford error in the frame, this time by Kinamon at second base, that allowed Presno to come home to score.
That was the final scoring of the game as the 'Dogs were blanked over the final three innings by Stanford closer Jack Little. Despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth after a leadoff single by Bins, Arruda, Tatum and Dempsey were retired in order.
