The Diamond 'Dogs saw the 2019 season come to an end on Monday evening in the Stanford Regional final falling 9-7.
Fresno State, who closes out the season 40-16-1 and Mountain West regular season and tournament champions, scored seven runs in the game despite being held to seven hits.
Junior catcher Carter Bins tallied his 15th multi-hit game of the season finishing with a double and home run along with three RBI. The rest of the Bulldog offense was held to five hits with their 3-4-5 hitters being held to 1-for-11.
On the mound, sophomore southpaw Jaime Arias got his second start of the season tossing four innings allowing four hits, four earned runs, three walks and struck out five.
Redshirt freshman Kevin Larson, who came into the game 2-0 with a 2.67 ERA on the season, suffered his career loss lasting 0.2 innings allowing three hits, five earned runs while walking three. Ryan Sullivan came on for 2.1 innings limiting Stanford (45-12) to one hit and struck out two.
Oscar Carvajal worked the final two innings striking out three while keeping the 'Dogs within striking distance.
How It Happened
Playing as the home team, the 'Dogs allowed Stanford to score first for the third straight night taking a quick 2-0 lead. The Cardinal scored on a two-run, two-out single through the right side by center fielder Christian Robinson, but the Bulldogs answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Second baseman Nolan Dempsey led off reaching base on a fielding error and designated hitter Emilio Nogales followed smacking a double to left field to put two runners in scoring position. After an intentional walk was issued to first baseman Zach Presno to load the bases, left fielder Jeff Jamison made Stanford pay for their decision with a two-run single up the middle (watch) that drove in both Dempsey and Nogales to tie the game at 2-2. With center fielder Zach Ashford going down on strikes, Bins kept the frame going with a hard-hit single up the middle to drive home Presno giving the 'Dogs their first lead.
The lead was short-lived as Cardinal catcher Maverick Handley led off the top of the third with a solo home run to left field tying the game at 3-3.Â
The 'Dogs regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Ashford drew a two-out walk and Bins made the Cardinal pay with a two-run bomb to left-center (watch) to push Fresno State in front, 5-3.
Stanford answered right back with a six-run top of the fifth inning to take back a 9-5 lead. A leadoff walk to left fielder Kyle Stowers was followed by Handley's second home run of the game with a towering shot to left-center to tie the game at five apiece. The Cardinal tacked on four more runs scoring on a bases-loaded walk by second baseman Duke Kinamon, a sacrifice fly by shorstop Tim Tawa and a two-run double to right field by Robinson.
As they did all night, the 'Dogs wasted little time responding in the bottom of the fifth as Dempsey singled to left field and Thimjon smacked a two-run home run to left field (watch), his third of the season, to cut the deficit to 9-7.
With Stanford getting its first two runners on base in the top of the eighth with a hit by pitch followed by a double down the right field line, Carvajal came into the game and induced a groundout and a pair of strikeouts to get the 'Dogs out of the jam and stay within striking distance.
Unfortunately, the 'Dogs offense went cold over the last two innings being retired in order in both the eighth and ninth innings.
