SAN FRANCISCO – Twice coming back to force overtime and double overtime, Fresno State ran out of gas, missing its final eight shots in a 102-93 defeat to San Francisco on Sunday night at the Sobrato Center. The Bulldogs overcame deficits of 12 in regulation and six in overtime.
Yanina Todorova and Haley Cavinder led Fresno State with 20 points apiece. Aly Gamez had a season-high 19 points. San Francisco's Lucie Hoskova (24), Ioanna Krimili (22) and Marta Galic (20) each posted 20-point games
The Dons outshoot the Bulldogs 46.5-38.3 percent and 43.5-25.8 percent from the 3-point line.
How It Happened
Trailing by four in the early minutes, Fresno State got things going by getting to the line. A 3-pointer from Kendyll Kinzer gave the 'Dogs an 11-6 lead. After the Dons narrowed their deficit to two, the Bulldogs struck late with an 8-0 run to go up 21-11 with a minute remaining. USF closed the period with seven unanswered to get back into the game. That momentum carried over into the second quarter as the Dons outscored the 'Dogs 16-4 during the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the period to take a 34-25 lead.
San Francisco built its lead up to 11 early in the third. The 'Dogs quickly cut the deficit back to five through a pair of free throws from Haley Cavinder and back-to-back buckets from Gamez. The Dons answered though with two of their three 3-pointers in the quarter to extend their lead back to 11. Yanina Todorova then scored five of the Bulldogs' next nine points during a two-minute stretch to help the Bulldogs pull within two at 53-51. Krimili countered with a 3-pointer and USF ended the period with a seven-point advantage.
San Francisco claimed its largest lead of the game two minutes into the fourth quarter at 68-56. Two minutes later, Todorova was fouled while knocking down a 3-pointer. The junior converted the free throw and ignited a 16-2 run. Her third 3 of the quarter knotted up the game at 70-70 with 3:18 remaining in regulation. Gamez then gave the 'Dogs their first lead in 23 minutes. Leading 75-72 with 26 seconds on the clock, Galic sank a triple that forced the game to overtime.
Like the fourth quarter, Fresno State had to come from behind once again as the Dons took a six-point with three minutes on the clock through an 8-0 run. Gamez was the catalyst, scoring six unanswered in less than a minute to level the game at 85-85. USF took a two-point lead after splitting two trips to the free throw line. Haley Cavinder sent the game to double overtime with a layup with three seconds on the clock.
Hoskova scored the first four points of the final period for USF. Fresno State struggled to get its shots to fall, shooting just 1-of-9 during the final five minutes of the game.
