Haley Cavinder's 31 points propels 'Dogs to 84-78 comeback at New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – While last weekend's win at Boise State came with the Fresno State taking the lead with a few minutes left, the Bulldogs waited until the final minute on Saturday at Dreamstyle Arena, stunning a crowd of more than 5,000 as they close the game on a 10-0 run to notch their 10th straight win. The Bulldogs moved to 18-4 on the year and 11-0 in conference play.
With 14 points in the first quarter, and another 10 in the fourth, Haley Cavinder scored a career-high 31 points to break her own record for the most points in a game by a Bulldog freshman. Cavinder also tallied six assists and five steals.
While the trio of Aly Gamez, Maddi Utti and Hanna Cavinder combined for a 11 points in the first half as Fresno State trailed by 10, the three put up 32 in the second as the 'Dogs secured yet another come-from-behind win. Gamez totaled 16 points and nine rebounds for the second straight game while Utti posted her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Hanna added 13 points.
How It Happened
Fresno State opened the game with a layup from Haley but New Mexico countered with a barrage of threes, sinking its first three 3-pointers of the game. With two back-to-back from Ahlise Hurst and Jaedyn De La Cerda, it forced an early timeout from the Bulldogs as the Lobos led 13-4. As the score sat at 20-8 with 2:37 left in the period, Haley then took over, going on a 10-0 run in 63 seconds to erase the Bulldogs' hole. Fresno State trailed 24-20 after 10 minutes.
The 'Dogs regained the lead just under two minutes into the second with a 3-pointer from Kendyll Kinzer but De La Cerda answered with her fourth 3 of the half. A minute later, De La Cerda hit another in transition and Hurst struck again on the Lobos ensuing possession to extend their lead to 33-25 with 6:05 on the clock. Gamez quickly answered with a three of her own but five was as close as the 'Dogs would get in the quarter. New Mexico scored twice in the final 36 seconds to extend its lead at the half to 44-34.
UNM pushed its advantage to 13 midway through the fourth. With 4:19 on the clock, Hanna started an 8-2 run with an and-1 that pulled the 'Dogs back within five. New Mexico was able to get to the line in the final minutes to extend its lead back to nine at 66-57 by the end of the quarter.
The lead quickly jumped back to 12 as Corina Carter knocked down a 3-pointer 23 seconds into the frame. In less than a minute, the twins countered with back-to-back buckets to pull the deficit to seven. Just over 30 seconds later, Kinzer made it a five-point game with her second three of the game. UNM would bring its lead back up to nine at 74-70 with 6:18 remaining but that was when the 'Dogs began to hit their stride. A steal from Gamez led to Haley finding her on the wing for an open look from three to counter Hosey's free throws. Following the media timeout, Haley knocked down a pair of mid-range jumpers within less than 30 seconds, the second coming off a steal from Wytalla Motta that forced the Lobos to burn a timeout.
New Mexico got its lead back up to four with 1:48 on the clock following 1-of-2 from De La Cerda at the line. Haley then slipped past a screen at the top of the key and drained her fifth triple of the day to make it a one-point game. Following a Lobo turnover, Utti pulled down an offensive rebound on the Bulldogs' possession and found Gamez alone on the right wing. The junior sank the trey to give the 'Dogs an 80-78 with 52 ticks on the clock. Haley then picked up her fifth steal of the day on the other end and Gamez was sent to the line. The captain calmly sank both to put the game out of reach.
