'Dogs claim outright title with 79-61 win at Utah State

LOGAN, Utah – Leading for more than 38 minutes on Saturday, Fresno State secured the Mountain West outright title with a 79-61 win over Utah State at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. It was the 14th straight win for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State held a near 14-percent difference from the field, shooting 48.4 percent overall.
Hanna Cavinder posted a team-high 20 points, her second consecutive game with 20. Maddi Utti added 18 points to go with seven rebounds. Both Bulldogs, who rank in the top eight in the league in field-goal percentage, shot an efficient 8-of-12 from the floor. Aly Gamez chipped in 13 points, all coming in the first half.
How It Happened
Fresno State opened with two quick buckets to force an Aggie timeout. The 'Dogs then increased their lead to 9-2 after a Gamez 3-pointer with 6:48 on the clock but Utah State answered with seven unanswered to tie the game at 9-9. With 4:24 on the clock, Hanna converted on an and-1 in transition that ignited a 12-0 run that saw her and Kendyll Kinzer score five apiece. The Bulldogs led 21-12 after one.
Gamez pushed the lead to 14 less than a minute into the second period with five unanswered. The Aggies though used an 8-0 run to creep back into the game. With 4:57 on the clock, Marlene Aniambossou was whistled for an intentional foul. Hanna hit 1-of-2 at the line but followed it up by sinking a 3-pointer from the wing. Haley Cavinder then scored a layup in transition to extend Fresno State's advantage to 12 at 34-22. The 'Dogs took the double-digit lead into the half, 42-31.
Scoring eight in the third period, Utti opened the half with back-to-back buckets to extend the advantage back to 15. A layup for Hanna with 7:18 on the clock was followed up with steal and a transition and-1 for the freshman to make it 53-35 game. Utah State would only get as close as 12 in the fourth quarter following a 3-pointer from Hailey Bassett with 7:13 to play but Fresno State scored seven unanswered to grab its largest lead of the game at 19.

- With the win, Fresno State clinched its first outright Mountain West title, third outright conference championship in program history (2009-10, 2011-12).
- The Bulldogs' 14-game win streak is the second longest in program history after surpassing the 13 that took place in Jaime White's first season (2014-15).
- Saturday marked the Bulldogs 19th win when scoring over 70 points (19-0).
- Fresno State had a 46-20 advantage in paint points. The 26-point disparity is Bulldogs' largest against a Division I opponent this season.
- After being outrebounded by nine in the first matchup with the Aggies, the 'Dogs held the advantage this time around, 43-37.
