FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team fell 8-1 in its series opener to Washington on Friday evening at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (2-2) was held to five hits in the contests as four Bulldogs collected base knocks. Leading the way was junior designated hitter Emilio Nogales with a pair of singles as he also drove in his first RBI of the season.
Sophomore outfielder Ryan Higgins smacked his second double of the season and scored a run while junior outfielder Miles Tomczak tallied his first hit of 2020 with a double down the right field line in the eighth inning (watch).
On the mound, junior southpaw Jaime Arias tossed five innings in his second start striking out four, but allowing six runs, five earned. The final four innings belonged to four relievers with freshman Alex Kendrick working 1.2 innings followed by sophomore Kyle Pruhsmeier for one-third on an inning.
The final two innings belonged to redshirt freshman Julian Sotelo and freshman Jake Harrell who each threw one inning as Sotelo struck out three and Harrell fanned one.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first inning, Washington got on the board with four runs, three earned, in the top of the second to take an early 4-0 lead. With the first three Huskies reaching base on singles, the bases were juiced for third baseman Tommy Williams. Hitting the ball to Jeff Jamison at shortstop, the sophomore tried to make a force play at third base, but the ball sailed away allowing two runners to score before UW added two more runs on a RBI groundout and a fielder's choice.
The Huskies added two more runs in the third inning on a single to right field by Williams and added a run on bunt single by shortstop Ramon Bramasco.
The Bulldogs drove across their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single through the right side by Nogales (watch) bringing home Higgins who led off with a ground-rule double to right-center.
Single runs in the sixth and eighth innings for Washington added insurance runs for the Huskies.
