FRESNO, Calif. - Despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, the Diamond 'Dogs were unable to come through falling 3-1 on Saturday afternoon to Washington at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (2-3) was limited to two hits in the contest by four Washington (4-2) pitchers.
Junior catcher Zach Presno smacked his second double of the season and scored the 'Dogs lone run of the game while junior outfielder Nate Thimjon legged out a triple in the ninth for the 'Dogs other base hit.
On the mound, redshirt junior right-hander Oscar Carvajal went 4.1 innings holding the Huskies to four hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out one.
Three relievers closed out the final 4.2 innings as southpaw Robbie Peters tossed 1.2 innings, senior Nik Cardinal threw one and redshirt senior Ryan Sullivan closed out the final two innings.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs jumped on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second as Presno led off with a ground-rule double to right-center. Moving to third on a groundout by outfielder Miles Tomczak, Presno came home to score on a RBI groundout to second base by third baseman Zach Morgan.
With the 'Dogs holding a 1-0 lead through four innings, the Huskies regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Loading the bases with no outs, Carvajal hit right fielder Christian Jones, his third hit by pitch of the inning, to bring home one. With Peters relieving Carvajal on the mound, UW pinch-hitter Christian Dicochea gave the Huskies the lead with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Washington added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a one-out single to left field by catcher Michael Petrie off Sullivan.
The 'Dogs did make one final push to tie the game as Thimjon laced a two-out triple down the right field line in the bottom of the ninth. That brought designated hitter Emilio Nogales to the plate representing the tying run, but unfortunately, the Bulldog junior flew out to center to end the game.
