Diamond 'Dogs suffer heartbreaking 9-6 loss to Washington
2/23/2020 6:15:00 PM | Baseball
Fresno State (2-4) held a 5-2 lead with one out in the top of the ninth, but Washington (5-2) erupted for seven runs in the frame to storm back and complete a weekend sweep of the Bulldogs.
After being held to one run and two hits on Saturday against Washington pitching, the Bulldogs generated more offense on Sunday tallying six runs and 10 hits.
A pair of 'Dogs had multiple hit games as the top two hitters in the lineup each had two hits apiece as both designated hitter Ryan Higgins and outfielder Nate Thimjon each hit home runs to go along with singles.
Redshirt freshman Ivan Luna smacked his first career home run as the Bulldogs hit multiple home runs in a game for the fourth time in six games.
On the mound, junior right-hander Jamison Hill made his 2020 debut getting the start tossing five innings while limiting the Huskies to four hits, two earned runs, one walk while striking out four.
Relievers Robbie Peters and Nik Cardinal saw action out of the bullpen for a second straight game before giving way to Kevin Larson who suffered the loss giving up four hits, seven earned runs while striking out two.
How It Happened
A low-scoring affair to get started, the 'Dogs struck first in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run to left-center (watch) by Thimjon to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs struck again in the fourth as catcher Zach Presno led off with a walk, moved to second on a groundout and came into score on a RBI single by second baseman Andrew Kachel (watch) to push the 'Dogs lead to 3-0 and knock starting pitcher Logan Gerling from the game.Â
Washington answered back with two runs off Hill in the top of the fifth with a solo home run and a bases-loaded walk, but the 'Dogs got one run back in the bottom of the frame on a leadoff home run to left field by Higgins (watch) to make it 4-2.
The 'Dogs added an insurance run in the eighth on a two-out double down the right field line by outfielder Dylan Johnson (watch), but the three-run cushion would not be enough as the Huskies powered up the offense for seven runs in the top of the ninth.
The Huskies totaled five hits in the frame getting a pair of RBI singles and a balk to tie the game at 5-5. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for first baseman Will Simpson who drew a walk to bring in a run and give the Huskies their first three lead of the game. Washington tacked on three more runs scoring one on a sacrifice fly and added two more on a double down the left field line.
A two-out home run to right field by Luna in the bottom of the ninth cut the Huskies' lead to 9-6, but a strikeout ended the 'Dogs comeback chances.
