'Dogs drop regular season finale 64-55 at Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyo. – On a cold-shooting night in Wyoming, Fresno State dropped its final game of the regular season 64-55 on Thursday evening at the Arena-Auditorium. The Bulldogs shot just 34.4 percent or the game.
The Cowgirls got 31 points from their bench and outshot the 8.9 percent (43.3%).
Hanna Cavinder led all scorers with 19 points. Maddi Utti recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
How It Happened
With a pair of buckets from Wytalla Motta, Fresno State took a 6-4 lead with 7:22 on the clock. The Bulldogs then went scoreless during the next five minutes which saw Wyoming go on a 14-0 run that was bookended with the Cowgirls first two threes of the game. The Bulldogs saw themselves down 20-7 heading into the second after shooting just 3-of-15. An 8-2 spurt to start the second got the 'Dogs back within seven. Jaeden Vaifanua answered with a pair of jumpers but Haley Cavinder knocked down a 3-pointer from the wing and Hanna followed with a layup to get the deficit down to six. With the defense picking up in the period, Fresno State trailed 28-20 at the half.
The Bulldogs quickly game out the gates in the third. A jumper from Utti was followed by the 'Dogs getting out it transition where Haley dumped it off to Gamez for a three on the wing that forced a Wyoming timeout. The Cowgirls answered with a 15-6 stretch that saw their lead rise to 12 at the 43-31 with 3:38 on the clock. Utti then dropped in her lone 3-pointer of the game and the Bulldogs scored seven unanswered in 66 seconds. Fresno State nearly took the five-point deficit into the fourth, but Taylor Rusk released a jumper just before an offensive foul was called away from the ball. By rule the bucket was awarded and the 'Dogs trailed by seven head into the final period.
With 8:09 on the clock in the fourth, Hanna pulled the 'Dogs back to within four with a strong and-1 but that was as close as they would get the rest of the way. During the next three minutes, Wyoming scored eight unanswered, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in the run as the Cowgirls' lead went back into double digits where it would hover around for the remainder of the game.

Fresno State will next take to the court on Monday at noon in Las Vegas, Nevada in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West tournament. The Bulldogs will face the winner of No. 8 Nevada and No. 9 New Mexico.

- Despite the loss, Fresno State will still enter the Mountain West tournament was the No. 1 seed.
- Fresno State's 16 conference wins is tied for the most league wins in program history.
- Thursday's loss marks the fourth straight year the Bulldogs have lost their last game of the regular season.
